Chapter 2

Police arrived three minutes later.
Ryan immediately changed.
His anger disappeared.
His voice became calm.
He stood beside the porch railing like a frightened husband who had somehow become the victim.
“Officer, this is a misunderstanding.”
I opened the door only after police told me to.
Sophie stayed behind me.
Jessica stood near Ryan, crying dramatically.
One officer looked at Sophie’s cheek.
“What happened to her?”
Ryan answered too quickly.
“She fell.”
Sophie tightened her grip on my shirt.
I looked at the officer.
“He slapped her.”
Ryan snapped, “Emily!”
The officer turned.
“Sir, let her speak.”
I explained everything.
The kiss.
Sophie confronting them.
Ryan striking her.
Jessica grabbing my hair.
Ryan charging toward me.
My response.
Then I pointed toward the camera.
“It should have recorded everything.”
Ryan looked genuinely terrified.
The second officer noticed.
“You have a problem with us checking it?”
“No.”
His answer sounded forced.
I opened the security application on my phone.
The footage was there.
But something was wrong.
The recording started exactly thirty seconds before Sophie entered the room.
Nothing earlier.
No Ryan.
No Jessica arriving.
No kiss.
The first visible moment showed Sophie yelling.
Then the slap.
The officer’s expression hardened.
Ryan’s shoulders dropped.
It was enough.
But I could not stop thinking about what Sophie had said.
“Daddy covered it yesterday.”
After the officers separated us, I asked her what she meant.
Sophie whispered, “I saw him put black tape on it.”
“When?”
“Yesterday morning.”
“Did he take it off?”
She shook her head.
I looked at the camera again.
There was no tape.
Someone else had removed it.
Ryan was taken aside for questioning.
Jessica insisted she had only defended herself.
The footage showed otherwise.
She had grabbed me first.
Then one officer asked if I wanted medical attention for Sophie.
“Yes.”
Ryan overheard.
“She doesn’t need a hospital.”
I turned toward him.
“You’re done deciding what she needs.”
His face twisted with anger.
But he stayed silent.
At the emergency clinic, the doctor confirmed Sophie had no serious injury.
Still, he documented the swelling.
Photographs were taken.
Sophie barely spoke.
That frightened me more than crying would have.
On the drive home, she asked, “Are Daddy and Jessica getting married now?”
“No, sweetheart.”
“Then why was he kissing her?”
I swallowed.
“Because Daddy made a bad choice.”
She looked out the window.
“He hit me because I saw.”
I had no answer that would make sense to a seven-year-old.
When we reached home, my sister Lauren was waiting.
She hugged Sophie.
Then she pulled me aside.
“You need to see something.”
“What?”
Lauren had arrived while police were still outside.
She had noticed a small trash bag beside Ryan’s car.
Inside was the black tape Sophie described.
And something else.
A screwdriver.
A tiny memory card.
And a receipt from an electronics store.
I picked up the memory card.
“What is this?”
Lauren shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
We inserted it into my laptop.
A folder appeared.
Dozens of video files.
All recorded inside my house.
Not by my camera system.
Different angles.
Bedrooms.
The kitchen.
My office.
Sophie’s playroom.
My skin went cold.

Someone had installed hidden cameras throughout our home.
And the earliest video was dated nine months earlier.
