Chapter 8 - EVAN SAID HE NEVER EXPECTED VANESSA TO HURT ROSEThrough counsel, Evan eventually gave a full statement.

He admitted discussing Rose as an obstacle.

Admitted encouraging Vanessa to make me more comfortable with future residential schooling.

Admitted helping draft the consolidation documents without independent trustee approval.

Admitted scheduling them for signature on my wedding morning because he believed I would be emotionally distracted and less likely to read closely.

That one ended his career with me.

But he insisted:

“I never told Vanessa to hurt her.”

The evidence supported that.

No message instructed violence.

In fact, one earlier text said:

Don’t be cruel to the kid. We need Daniel calm.

What a sentence.

Not:

Rose deserves kindness.

Cruelty is strategically inconvenient.

Still, different responsibility.

Vanessa’s physical abuse was hers.

Evan’s manipulation was his.

We did not need to make him guilty of everything to understand he had betrayed us.
