Chapter 5

Officer Morales ran outside.

A black sedan sped away from the curb.

He called in the license plate.

It belonged to a rental company.

Claire closed every curtain in the house.

Emily held Lily while another officer removed the camera.

“Was Grandma inside Bunny?” Lily asked.

“No, sweetheart.”

“Could she hear us?”

Emily didn’t know how long the device had been there.

Officer Morales placed it in an evidence bag.

“This violates the protective order if we can connect it to Diane.”

“Who else would do it?” Claire asked.

“We need proof.”

Ethan stood at the window.

“She took Mr. Rocket because she knows I love him.”

Emily knelt beside him.

“She did it to frighten you.”

“It worked.”

His honesty broke her heart.

Rachel called with more bad news.

Ryan’s attorney had filed for separate temporary custody.

He claimed Diane acted alone and that Ryan had been manipulated.

“He wants the court to treat him as another victim,” Rachel said.

“He watched it happen.”

“The audio proves he knew about one incident. He’ll say he made a terrible mistake.”

“Will the judge believe him?”

“Maybe. Courts often try to preserve a parent’s relationship with the children.”

Emily looked at Ethan.

He was listening.

“We’ll talk later,” she said.

That afternoon, Ryan arrived for his first supervised visit.

Nina Patel used a family-services office.

Emily waited behind one-way glass with Rachel.

Ryan entered carrying gifts.

Lily immediately hid beneath the table.

He put the bags down.

“I brought your favorite cookies.”

Ethan didn’t move.

“Where is Mr. Rocket?”

Ryan’s face tightened.

“I don’t know.”

“Grandma took him.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Tell her to give him back.”

“I’m not speaking to Grandma right now.”

Ethan stared at him.

“That’s a lie.”

Ryan glanced toward the observation window.

“Why do you think that?”

“Because she called you in the car.”

“When?”

“Yesterday. Your phone connected to the speakers.”

Ryan’s shoulders stiffened.

“What did you hear?”

“She said Mommy found Grandpa’s papers.”

Nina intervened.

“This visit is for rebuilding trust, not questioning Ethan.”

Ryan nodded quickly.

“You’re right.”

Lily crawled out and sat beside her brother.

Ryan smiled at her.

“I missed you.”

“Why didn’t you open the pantry?”

His smile disappeared.

“I made a mistake.”

“You heard me crying.”

“I thought Grandma would let you out.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Ryan’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was weak.”

Lily considered his answer.

Then she pushed the cookies away.

“Mommy is strong.”

Emily pressed a hand against the glass.

Ryan tried to apologize.

Ethan refused to look at him.

The visit ended early when Lily began crying.

In the hallway, Ryan approached Emily.

“I want to cooperate.”

“Then cooperate with the police.”

“My attorney says I shouldn’t.”

“Of course he does.”

“If I tell them everything, I could go to prison.”

“You helped steal from your children.”

“I was going to put the money back.”

“With what?”

Ryan looked around.

“Mom bought three rental properties through DCR Holdings. The money is in them.”

“Why take it?”

“She said Dad cheated her.”

“Thomas protected the children from her.”

Ryan winced.

“She raised me to believe everything Dad owned belonged to us.”

“No. She raised you to believe everything belonged to her.”

He rubbed his face.

“I can give you access to her accounting files.”

“Why haven’t you?”

“They’re in the house.”

“The police can get a warrant.”

“They need more evidence.”

“Then give them a statement.”

Ryan looked toward the visitation room.

“Will you let me see the kids without supervision if I do?”

“This is not a trade.”

“They need their father.”

“They need a father who does the right thing without being rewarded.”

Emily walked away.

That evening, Officer Morales called.

The rental sedan had been returned.

The renter used identification belonging to a woman named Karen Doyle.

Karen had reported her wallet stolen three weeks earlier.

Security footage showed the driver wearing a baseball cap and large sunglasses.

The face wasn’t clear.

But the driver’s height and build matched Diane.

The camera inside Mr. Bunny had been purchased with cash.

Diane knew how to avoid leaving a trail.

At midnight, Ethan woke Emily.

“There’s someone outside.”

She heard movement near the back door.

Claire called 911.

Officers surrounded the property.

They found no intruder.

Instead, they found Mr. Rocket hanging from the backyard fence.

A small voice recorder had been sewn inside.

When Officer Morales pressed play, Diane’s voice filled the yard.

“Tell the truth about your mother, Ethan, and everything can return to normal.”

Emily pulled her son away.

The message continued.

“If you keep lying, your father will lose everything.”

Ethan began shaking.

“I’m not lying.”

“I know.”

“Dad will go to jail because of me.”

“No. Adults are responsible for their own choices.”

“But Grandma said—”

“Grandma wants you to carry her guilt.”

Emily held his face.

“You are seven. None of this belongs to you.”

The recorder became critical evidence.

A judge issued a search warrant for Diane’s condo.

Police found recording equipment, copies of the edited videos, and photographs of Claire’s house.

They did not find Diane.

She had disappeared.

Her passport remained in the condo.

Her car was parked in the garage.

Ryan claimed he hadn’t heard from her.

Emily didn’t believe him.

Two days later, Lily returned to preschool.

A security officer walked her inside.

Emily gave the principal copies of the protective order.

Diane was forbidden from approaching.

At noon, the school called.

Someone had tried to collect Lily.

The woman wore a dark wig and claimed to be Claire.

The front-desk assistant requested identification.

The woman ran.

Security cameras captured part of her face.

It was Diane.

Police issued a warrant for violating the protective order and attempted custodial interference.

Ryan called Emily immediately.

“I swear I didn’t know.”

“How did she know Lily went back to school?”

“Maybe she watched the house.”

“Or maybe you told her.”

“I didn’t.”

“She knew the exact time.”

Ryan began crying.

“I talked to her yesterday.”

Emily went silent.

“She called from a blocked number,” he continued. “She said she was scared.”

“What did you tell her?”

“Only that the children needed routine.”

“You told her Lily was returning.”

“I didn’t think she would go there.”

“You keep saying that.”

“I’m trying to help.”

“You helped her locate our daughter.”

“I made another mistake.”

Emily’s voice became hard.

“No. A mistake is forgetting an appointment. You made a choice.”

She sent the recording of the call to Rachel.

By evening, Ryan’s supervised visits were suspended.

The police questioned him.

He refused to reveal where Diane might be hiding.

He said he didn’t know.

The bank suspended him from his job because of the trust investigation.

His entire life began collapsing.

Still, he protected his mother.

Emily returned to the family house with police officers to collect clothes and documents.

The kitchen remained covered in dried noodles.

Ryan had not cleaned them.

The pantry door stood open.

Emily entered.

She imagined Lily alone in the dark.

A faint scratch marked the lower wall.

Then another.

Small letters had been carved into the paint.

MOM WILL COME.

Emily touched the words.

Lily had waited for her.

She had trusted Emily to save her without knowing Emily was unaware.

Officer Morales called from upstairs.

“You need to see this.”

He stood inside Diane’s guest room.

The closet looked ordinary.

Behind a row of coats, they found a second door.

It led to a narrow storage space.

The walls were covered with photographs of Emily.

Emily leaving work.

Emily buying groceries.

Emily speaking with neighbors.

There were copies of her medical records, employment reviews, and old college photographs.

A calendar recorded every late work night.

Diane had been building her case for years.

On a desk sat draft statements written for Ethan and Lily.

MY MOM HITS ME.

MY MOM DOESN’T FEED ME.

I WANT TO LIVE WITH GRANDMA.

Emily felt nauseated.

“She planned to make them say these things.”

Officer Morales photographed everything.

He opened a file cabinet.

Inside were trust records and property deeds.

The evidence linked Diane to the stolen money.

But one folder was labeled RYAN.

Emily opened it.

There were copies of messages between Ryan and Diane.

One was dated six months earlier.

Diane: We need proof Emily is dangerous.

Ryan: I can make her angry. You record it.

Another message followed.

Diane: Once the court removes her, we control the children and the trust.

Ryan: No one can know I helped.

Emily stared at the words.

Ryan had not merely ignored the plan.

He had participated.

Officer Morales read the messages.

“We need to bring him in.”

A floorboard creaked downstairs.

The officers reached for their weapons.

“Police!” Morales shouted.

Footsteps raced toward the back door.

One officer ran outside.

Emily heard a struggle.

Then Ryan was dragged into the kitchen.

He had entered with his old key.

His face was wild.

“What are you doing here?” Emily demanded.

Ryan stared at the folder in her hands.

“I came to destroy that.”

Officer Morales handcuffed him.

“Where is your mother?”

“I don’t know.”

“You broke into a secured search scene.”

“It’s my house.”

“You attempted to remove evidence.”

Ryan looked at Emily.

“Those messages don’t tell the whole story.”

“They tell enough.”

“Mom threatened me.”

“With what?”

Ryan’s face collapsed.

“She said she would tell you what happened the night my father died.”

Emily frowned.

“Thomas had a heart attack.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

Officer Morales stepped closer.

“What happened?”

Ryan’s lips trembled.

“My father was still alive when Mom found him.”

Emily felt cold.

“She waited before calling for help,” Ryan whispered. “And I helped her lie about the time.”

A phone began ringing inside the wall.

Everyone froze.

Officer Morales followed the sound to the hidden room.

Behind a loose panel, he found a prepaid phone.

Diane was calling.

Ryan stared at the screen.

“Answer it,” Morales said.

Ryan hesitated.

Then he accepted the call.

Diane spoke before he could say anything.

“Did you find the folder?”

Ryan looked at Emily.

“Yes.”

“Burn it,” Diane ordered. “Then come to the old lake house.”

Officer Morales silently wrote on a notepad.

KEEP HER TALKING.

Ryan swallowed.

“Why?”

“Because Emily will destroy both of us.”

“Mom, what are you planning?”

Diane laughed softly.

“What I should have done from the beginning.”

The call ended.

Ryan looked at the officers.

Emily’s heart hammered.

The old lake house had belonged to Thomas.

It had been empty since his death.

Then Claire called.

Her voice was frantic.

“Emily, Ethan is gone.”

Emily nearly dropped the phone.

“What?”

“He was in the backyard with the officer. The gate is open.”

On the kitchen counter, the prepaid phone received a photograph.

Ethan sat inside a car.

Diane’s hand rested on his shoulder.
