Chapter 8

No one spoke.

Daniel stared at Emily as if he had misunderstood her.

“Seven years?”

Emily looked around the ruined bank.

“What year is it?”

Daniel told her.

She covered her face.

“No. That can’t be right.”

“You disappeared three years ago,” he said.

Emily shook her head again.

“I was taken seven years ago.”

Daniel stepped back.

“I saw you every day until three years ago.”

“That wasn’t me.”

Lily’s face flashed through my mind.

She had been three when Emily supposedly died.

If Emily disappeared seven years earlier, Lily would not remember the real woman who gave birth to her.

Victor closed his eyes.

Brooks turned toward him.

“Explain.”

He said nothing.

Daniel seized him.

“Who lived in my house?”

Victor finally answered.

“Her name was Elena.”

Emily looked sick.

“My sister.”

Daniel released Victor.

“You had a sister?”

“A twin.”

Emily’s voice broke.

“Elena disappeared when we were twenty-two. Reed told me she died.”

Victor leaned against the wall.

“She worked for us.”

Daniel struggled to breathe.

“For four years, I shared a home with a stranger?”

“She was trained to copy Emily’s behavior,” Victor said. “Vanessa coached her.”

“And Lily?”

Victor looked at Emily.

The truth became visible before he spoke.

“Lily is Elena’s daughter.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Emily began crying.

“My sister had a baby?”

“Reed used Daniel to create a legal identity for the child,” Victor said. “Elena entered your home when Lily was an infant.”

Daniel’s anger exploded.

He slammed Victor against the wall.

“Lily is my daughter.”

“I didn’t say she wasn’t biologically yours.”

Daniel froze.

Victor continued.

“Elena approached you while pretending to be Emily during a conference trip. Reed arranged it.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

He looked devastated.

“I didn’t know,” he whispered.

“I know.”

Victor’s words were cruel, but they didn’t change the years Daniel had raised Lily.

They did not change the way Lily reached for him when she was afraid.

“She is my daughter,” Daniel repeated.

“Yes,” Emily said. “She is.”

Brooks forced Victor into the custody vehicle before Daniel could strike him again.

The fire was contained.

Emily was taken to a hospital under guard.

Daniel stayed beside her.

Lily arrived an hour later.

She entered the hospital room slowly.

Emily sat upright in bed.

For seven years, she had survived by imagining this moment.

But Lily did not recognize her.

She hid behind Daniel.

“Who is that?”

Daniel knelt beside her.

“This is Emily.”

“My mommy?”

He hesitated.

“She loves you very much.”

Lily studied Emily’s face.

“You look like my mommy, but different.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m your aunt.”

Lily looked confused.

Daniel explained as gently as he could.

The woman Lily remembered as her mother was Emily’s twin sister.

Emily had known Lily only as a baby.

Lily listened without speaking.

Then she took off the gold necklace.

“Did this belong to you?”

Emily nodded.

“Yes.”

“Vanessa said she took it from Mommy.”

“She took it from me.”

Lily placed it in Emily’s hand.

“I kept it safe.”

Emily began crying.

“You did.”

Lily moved closer.

“Did you know my other mommy?”

“She was my sister.”

“Did you love her?”

“Even when I was angry with her.”

“Did she love me?”

Emily looked at Daniel.

He could not answer.

Elena had deceived him for years, but we did not know whether every feeling had been false.

“Yes,” Emily told Lily. “I believe she loved you.”

Lily climbed onto the bed and hugged her.

Emily held her with trembling arms.

Daniel turned away to hide his tears.

Later, when Lily fell asleep beside Emily, Brooks told us what her team had found.

Elena died in the highway crash.

She had tried to escape the network and tell Daniel the truth.

Vanessa discovered her plan.

Reed arranged the accident.

“Then why did Vanessa wait a year to approach me?” Daniel asked.

“She needed time to erase Elena’s records and convince you the crash was accidental,” Brooks said.

Emily looked toward Lily.

“My sister became part of the network. But she died trying to protect her child.”

Daniel sat beside the window.

“I loved her.”

Emily’s face tightened.

“I know.”

“I thought she was you.”

“I know that too.”

“I don’t expect you to understand.”

Emily looked at him for a long moment.

“I spent seven years blaming Elena for helping Reed take my life. But she lived inside that life. She raised Lily. And she died trying to expose them.”

Daniel covered his face.

Emily reached for his hand.

“We don’t have to understand everything tonight.”

They sat together in silence.

Brooks placed Victor’s key card on the table.

“The children’s home connected to this card is called Haven House. It closed two years ago.”

“What happened to the children?” I asked.

“Official records say they were transferred to foster families. The records are false.”

Aaron entered with his arm in a sling.

“I found the private archive.”

He placed a folder on the table.

“The card didn’t only show an address. It contained a digital code tied to an online storage vault.”

Inside were photographs of children with new names.

Emily searched until she found a little girl with dark hair and gray eyes.

The caption read Grace Miller, age six.

Emily touched the photograph.

“That’s her.”

Daniel moved closer.

“She has your eyes.”

Grace had been placed with a family in a small town near the Oklahoma border.

The family name was Miller.

The listed father was Paul Miller, a former Dallas police officer connected to Reed.

Brooks checked the address.

“The property belongs to Judge Mallory.”

Daniel stood.

“We leave now.”

“It’s almost midnight,” I said.

“That child has waited six years.”

Emily removed the hospital monitor from her finger.

A nurse objected.

Emily ignored her.

“I’m going too.”

Brooks arranged a warrant and requested local support from officers outside Reed’s known network.

We drove north under heavy protection.

Haven House stood on several acres surrounded by a high fence.

The main building was dark.

A smaller caretaker’s house had one light on.

A tactical team approached first.

The front door was open.

No one was inside.

Children’s drawings covered the walls.

One showed a little girl standing between two adults.

Above them, she had written MOM, DAD, and UNCLE MARCUS.

Emily touched the drawing.

“He was here.”

A bedroom upstairs contained Grace’s clothes.

The bed was still warm.

Daniel found a stuffed bluebird beneath the blanket.

Emily stared at it.

“I called Lily my bluebird.”

Aaron searched a desk.

He found adoption papers signed by Judge Mallory.

The child’s name had been changed twice.

A map on the wall showed a private airfield twenty miles away.

Brooks called the aviation authority.

A small plane had requested clearance to depart for Mexico.

The passenger list contained three names.

Marcus Reed.

Paul Miller.

Grace Miller.

“They’re taking her out of the country,” Daniel said.

We raced toward the airfield.

Emily clutched Grace’s stuffed bird.

“What if she thinks Paul is her father?”

“Then we tell her the truth slowly,” Daniel said.

“What if she doesn’t want us?”

“We give her time.”

“What if Reed told her I was dead?”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“We believed each other was dead. We found our way back.”

The airfield appeared beyond the trees.

A small plane moved toward the runway.

Police vehicles blocked one end.

The pilot turned the aircraft.

Reed’s voice came through Brooks’s radio.

“Move the vehicles, or the child dies.”

Emily grabbed the radio.

“Marcus, let me speak to Grace.”

There was silence.

Then a young girl spoke.

“Who are you?”

Emily’s tears fell.

“My name is Emily.”

“Uncle Marcus says you’re a bad woman.”

“He lied.”

“He says my mommy gave me away.”

“I am your mommy.”

Grace did not answer.

Reed returned to the radio.

“Clear the runway.”

Daniel took the radio.

“You need Emily alive to open the account.”

“Not anymore.”

“You’re lying. The account still requires her sequence.”

A pause followed.

Aaron whispered, “He needs confirmation that Emily remembers it.”

Daniel understood.

“She will give you the sequence after Grace leaves the plane.”

Reed laughed.

“You’re negotiating with money that belongs to me.”

“It belongs to the families you destroyed.”

“It belongs to the man who had the courage to take it.”

The plane stopped.

The side door opened.

Paul Miller stepped out holding Grace by the arm.

The little girl wore pajamas beneath a coat.

She looked terrified.

Emily started forward.

Brooks stopped her.

Paul held a gun near Grace.

“Emily gives us the sequence,” he shouted. “The girl walks away.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“I remember it.”

“You can’t give it to them.”

“I can’t risk her life.”

“We’ll get her back.”

“How?”

Daniel had no answer.

Emily stepped onto the runway.

She began reciting numbers.

Reed appeared in the plane’s doorway.

He typed them into a computer.

After the final number, he smiled.

“Thank you.”

Paul shoved Grace toward the plane instead of releasing her.

Emily screamed.

Reed fired toward the police vehicles.

Officers returned fire.

Daniel ran onto the runway.

Paul dragged Grace toward the steps.

Lily’s voice suddenly came through the loudspeaker of our vehicle.

“Grace!”

Claire had remained with Lily behind the police line.

Lily had taken the radio.

Grace stopped.

Lily continued.

“My name is Lily. I’m your sister.”

Paul pulled Grace harder.

Grace bit his hand.

He screamed and released her.

Daniel reached her first.

He lifted Grace and carried her behind a police vehicle.

Emily ran to them.

Paul tried to return to the plane.

Brooks tackled him.

The pilot abandoned the cockpit.

Reed slammed the cabin door.

The plane accelerated.

Police vehicles still blocked the runway.

Reed attempted to turn onto the grass.

One wheel sank into the mud.

The plane tilted and stopped.

Agents surrounded it.

Reed emerged with his hands raised.

The silver watch was gone.

His confidence was gone too.

Brooks handcuffed him herself.

“You’re under arrest for kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, and murder.”

Reed smiled at her.

“You’ll never make the evidence survive court.”

Aaron held up Emily’s recovered archive.

“We already did.”

Reed’s smile disappeared.

Across the runway, Emily knelt in front of Grace.

The little girl stared at her.

“You said you’re my mommy.”

Emily nodded through her tears.

“Yes.”

Grace looked at Daniel.

“And who is he?”

Daniel lowered himself beside them.

“I’m someone who will protect you for as long as you’ll let me.”

Lily ran toward them and wrapped her coat around Grace’s shoulders.

“I’m your sister,” she said again.

Grace looked between all of us.

Then she began to cry.

Emily held out her arms.

Grace hesitated before stepping into them.

Emily pulled both girls close.

May you like

Daniel wrapped his arms around all three.

For one moment, the years Reed had stolen could not separate them.
