Chapter 1

Minutes Before My Son’s Wedding, I Opened the Bride’s Dressing-Room Door—and What I Saw Made Me Run Straight to Him.

The wedding was about to begin at a hotel in Dallas when I heard a child crying behind the bride’s dressing-room door.

I recognized the voice immediately.

It was Lily, my son Daniel’s six-year-old daughter.

I knocked, but Vanessa shouted, “Give me five minutes!”

Then I heard a sharp slap.

I opened the door without permission.

Lily was trembling in the corner with a red mark across her cheek.

Her flower-girl dress was torn, and Vanessa was gripping her wrist.

“What are you doing to her?” I shouted.

Vanessa released Lily and smiled as though nothing had happened.

“She spilled juice on my gown.”

“I didn’t,” Lily whispered. “She poured it herself.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You’re already ruining my wedding, just like you ruined my relationship with your father.”

I pulled Lily behind me.

Then I noticed a suitcase beside the vanity and two airline tickets resting on top.

Both tickets were for that night.

Neither ticket had Daniel’s name on it.

Vanessa snatched them away and warned, “Walk out now, Margaret.”

I grabbed Lily’s hand and ran toward the ballroom.

Daniel was standing near the altar, greeting guests.

“Daniel, we need to stop the wedding,” I whispered.

His smile disappeared.

I told him about the slap, the suitcase, and the tickets.

But instead of looking surprised, he calmly checked his watch.

“I know, Mom.”

I stared at him. “You knew she was hurting Lily?”

Daniel reached inside his jacket and handed me a small wireless earpiece.

“I heard everything from the moment Vanessa entered that room.”

My knees nearly gave way.

“Then why haven’t you called off the wedding?”

Daniel looked toward the ballroom doors as the music began.

“Because Vanessa thinks she’s marrying me.”

Before I could ask what he meant, two federal agents stepped out from behind the curtains.

One of them opened a folder containing Vanessa’s photograph and whispered, “If she reaches the altar, we finally have enough to arrest everyone involved.”

Then Lily tugged my sleeve and pointed toward the groom’s entrance.

“Grandma,” she whispered, “that’s the man from Vanessa’s other ticket.”
