Chapter 5 - THE NAME IN THE LETTER

I tore the envelope open.

My hands shook as I pulled out the folded paper.

It was dated exactly three days before my wife died.

> If you are reading this, the worst has happened. He has returned. I speak of Silas Voss. His father was my business partner. We built this empire together. Then his father gambled everything away. When I tried to stop him, he ruined our name, stole our assets, and then he died—leaving his son believing I had murdered him and stolen his birthright. Silas has spent his whole life waiting to take revenge. He swore he would take everything I love. My fortune. My reputation. My family. My daughter. I fear he has already found a way in. Trust no one. Not your friends. Not your advisors. Not even those you have known for years. Silas does not fight fair. He uses faces you will welcome. Hands you will hold. Voices you will believe. If my daughter is gone… protect her children. Protect them with your life. Because Silas will not stop until this bloodline is erased.

I lowered the letter.

My breath felt shallow.

“Silas Voss,” I whispered.

Clara nodded.

“I heard your wife’s father speak the name once. Years ago. He said Silas was a ghost. A shadow. A man who had spent his entire life preparing to destroy this family.”

“Vanessa works for him,” I said. “She was his way in. She was supposed to marry me. Become my children’s stepmother. And then… destroy us from the inside.”

Clara closed her eyes.

“And when Olivia exposed her… he ordered her to kill Emma. To hurt you. To show you that he can reach you anywhere.”

I thought of the messages. The threats. The seal on the envelope already broken.

“He is already inside,” I said. “He knows we found the letter. He knows we know his name.”

My phone buzzed.

I almost dropped it.

A new message.

> You found the letter. Good. Now you know who I am. Meet me at the old warehouse on River Road at midnight. Come alone. Or I will send Vanessa back. And next time… there will be no video.

I showed the message to Clara.

She grabbed my arm.

“You cannot go. It is a trap.”

“If I don’t go,” I said, “he will come here. To my daughters. I cannot let that happen.”

“Then let me call the police,” Clara said.

“And tell them what?” I asked. “A threatening text message? An old letter? He will deny everything. He will say I am paranoid. And then he will strike when my guard is down. I need to see him. I need to know what he truly wants.”

Clara looked at me long and hard. Then she nodded slowly.

“Go. But be careful. Silas Voss does not invite people to talk. He invites them to disappear.”

I folded the letter carefully and placed it inside my coat.

“I will be careful,” I said. “But if I am not back by two o’clock in the morning… take the girls. Go to my brother’s house. Do not tell anyone where you are. Not the police. Not our friends. No one.”

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

“Mr. Adrian…”

“Promise me, Clara.”

May you like

She nodded.

“I promise.”
