Chapter 3 - THE SHADOW BEHIND HER

I stared at the screen until the words blurred.

Clara stepped closer.

“Who is it?”

I showed her the message.

Her face grew grave.

“Someone knew she was recording,” Clara said. “Or someone was watching. They know what happened in this room.”

“Vanessa,” I said. “It has to be Vanessa. She threatened me before she left.”

Clara shook her head slowly.

“Vanessa does not have this kind of reach. She does not know this number. She does not know how to hide her identity this cleanly. There is someone else, Mr. Adrian. Standing behind her. Pulling every string.”

I wanted to dismiss her words. I wanted to believe this was just a jealous, angry woman lashing out. But deep down, I felt it too. Vanessa had been too confident. Too prepared. She had walked into my life perfectly—showing up exactly when I was lonely, saying exactly what I needed to hear.

Too perfect.

“Clara,” I said, “how long have you suspected she wasn’t what she seemed?”

Clara hesitated.

“From the beginning. She knew things she should not have known. She mentioned names… details… family secrets that were never shared with outsiders. Once, she spoke of your late wife’s father as if she had known him personally. But he died years before she ever met you.”

My blood ran cold.

“Did you say something then?”

“I tried,” Clara said sadly. “But you were happy. You were grieving. I did not want to be the one to take that away from you. I thought perhaps I was mistaken. I hoped I was wrong. Today… I learned I was not.”

I sat down heavily on the bottom step. Emma was still in my arms, growing sleepy, her breathing soft and steady against my chest.

“Dad?” Olivia stepped forward quietly. “I saved the video. But… there was something else.”

I looked up.

“What do you mean?”

Olivia swallowed hard.

“When I was checking the footage… I saw something before Vanessa pushed the stroller. Someone texted her. She looked at her phone, smiled… and then walked straight toward Emma.”

I stood up.

“Did you see the message?”

“I saw the preview,” Olivia said. “It said: Do it now. Or you lose everything.”

The room went silent again.

“Someone told her to do it,” I whispered. “Someone ordered her to hurt Emma.”

Clara’s eyes filled with fear.

“Then she was never the target. She was only the weapon. And if someone sent her… they will send someone else.”

Just then, my phone buzzed again.
