Chapter 6

Claire’s trust became the center of everything.

My late wife had been smarter than all of us.

She had left Sophie protected shares in her family company, real estate income, and a college fund I could not touch except for Sophie’s care.

I never wanted to touch it.

Vanessa did.

Nadine found emails between Vanessa and my mother.

Sophie is the obstacle.

After the wedding, Richard will listen.

If he won’t, we document instability.

My mother replied:

Judges dislike emotional widowers. We position you as the stable maternal figure.

I read the email three times.

Maternal figure.

Vanessa had starved my daughter to become her mother on paper.

I called Eleanor.

She answered coldly.

“Have you calmed down?”

“No.”

“Good. Anger makes you reckless.”

“You conspired against Sophie.”

“I protected the family.”

“From a six-year-old?”

“From Claire’s family influence.”

There it was.

The real wound.

Eleanor had hated Claire.

Claire had seen through her.

Claire had insisted on the trust.

Claire had protected Sophie even from the grave.

I said, “You will never see Sophie again.”

“You cannot cut out your mother.”

“I already did.”

Her voice cracked for the first time.

“Richard.”

I hung up.

The next morning, Vanessa gave a statement claiming I had abused her and Sophie was troubled.

Then Marcus sent police the full footage.

By lunch, Vanessa’s statement became evidence of perjury.

By dinner, her lawyer stopped returning her calls.
