Chapter 4

I watched the footage in my study with police beside me and Sophie upstairs with her nanny, Mrs. Bell, who had been called back from vacation in tears.

The video showed my mother in the kitchen.

Vanessa stood with her arms folded.

Sophie cried by the pantry door.

My mother’s voice came through clearly.

“You must stop letting her control this house.”

Vanessa said, “Richard will never choose me if Sophie keeps acting wounded.”

Eleanor replied, “Then make him see what she really is.”

Sophie sobbed, “I want Daddy.”

Vanessa opened the pantry.

My mother did not stop her.

She watched.

Then Vanessa pushed Sophie inside and shut the door.

Eleanor said, “Only an hour. We don’t need marks.”

I walked out before the video ended.

In the hallway, I pressed my fist against the wall and tried to breathe.

Only an hour.

We don’t need marks.

My mother had measured cruelty by visibility.

The police arrested Vanessa.

Not my mother.

Not yet.

Eleanor had already called her attorney.

Of course she had.

When I returned to the kitchen, my mother stood tall, hands clasped.

“You are overreacting.”

I looked at her like I had never seen her before.

“You watched.”

“She needed discipline.”

“She needed dinner.”

“You are turning into your father.”

I almost laughed.

My father had been cold, cruel, impossible to please.

I had spent my life trying not to become him.

But that day, I understood something.

My mother had not survived his cruelty.

She had studied it.

I said, “Leave my house.”

Her face tightened.

“You need me.”

“No. I needed to believe you loved my daughter.”

Sophie called from upstairs.

“Daddy?”

May you like

I turned away from Eleanor.

I chose the voice that mattered.
