Chapter 6 - The Secret That Could Destroy Us

The sound of breaking glass changed everything.

One second, I was standing in the rehabilitation room with Massimo, watching him celebrate sixty seconds of progress.

The next second, the entire mansion transformed into a battlefield.

The lights disappeared.

The alarms screamed.

And every person in the house moved with terrifying precision.

I had seen emergency situations before.

Hospitals were full of them.

I had watched doctors rush into operating rooms.

I had watched families receive devastating news.

I had watched patients wake up after accidents and realize their lives had changed forever.

But I had never seen anything like this.

Because in a hospital, people fought to save lives.

Here, people were preparing to protect them.

“Tessa.”

Massimo’s voice cut through the darkness.

“Stay behind me.”

I stared at him.

“You’re serious?”

His eyes locked onto mine.

“Completely.”

I almost laughed.

“Massimo, you are literally sitting in a wheelchair.”

His expression didn’t change.

“And I’m still telling you to stay behind me.”

There was something about the way he said it.

Not arrogance.

Not pride.

Protection.

The same man who hated needing help was now focused entirely on protecting someone else.

Me.

Before I could respond, Elena rushed into the room.

“Mr. Pascale.”

Her voice was controlled, but I could hear the urgency underneath.

“How many?”

“Three confirmed inside the east wing.”

Massimo’s face changed.

The coldness returned.

The man I knew as my patient disappeared.

The man everyone feared returned.

“Lock down the property.”

“Already done.”

“Find out how they entered.”

Elena nodded.

Then she looked at me.

Her expression said everything.

This was the world Massimo had tried to keep away from me.

And now it had found me anyway.

---

The next few minutes felt unreal.

Guards moved through the halls.

Doors locked automatically.

Phones rang.

Orders were given.

And somehow, through all of it, Massimo remained calm.

That was what frightened me the most.

Not panic.

Not anger.

Control.

He was terrifying because he didn’t need to raise his voice.

Everyone listened.

Everyone obeyed.

I finally understood what Camila meant when she said Massimo Pascale controlled every room he entered.

Because even injured…

Even sitting in a wheelchair…

He was still the person everyone followed.

“Massimo.”

He looked at me.

“You need to leave.”

“No.”

His eyes narrowed.

“That wasn’t a suggestion.”

“And I’m not your employee.”

“Tessa.”

The way he said my name stopped me.

There was fear in his voice.

Not for himself.

For me.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.”

“Then explain.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because if you knew everything, you would look at me differently.”

That answer surprised me.

Because for the first time, I saw something underneath his anger.

Shame.

---

A few minutes later, the situation was contained.

The intruders had escaped before reaching the main house.

Nobody was injured.

But the message was clear.

They had gotten inside.

And someone had helped them.

That was the part that bothered Massimo.

Someone from within.

A betrayal.

When the guards left, he remained silent.

Too silent.

I knew that silence.

It was the kind people used when they were fighting something inside themselves.

“You think it was someone close to you.”

He looked toward the window.

“Yes.”

“Do you know who?”

“Not yet.”

“But you have suspicions.”

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

I moved closer.

“Massimo.”

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“You need to understand something.”

I waited.

“Everyone around me has a reason for being there.”

“That’s not true.”

“It is.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Some people are there because they care.”

His eyes moved to mine.

“You believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I thought about it.

Because I realized something.

Massimo had spent his whole life surrounded by people who wanted something.

Money.

Power.

Protection.

Status.

He had forgotten what genuine care looked like.

“Because I’m here.”

The words came out before I could stop them.

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

---

The next morning, Massimo refused therapy.

Not because he was angry.

Because he was distracted.

“You’re wasting time.”

I looked at him.

“Excuse me?”

“You should leave.”

I crossed my arms.

“Are you firing me?”

“No.”

“Then stop trying to make me quit.”

His eyes lifted.

“You know me too well.”

“That’s because you’re predictable.”

A small smile appeared.

“You’re the only person who says that.”

“Maybe everyone else is too scared.”

“Maybe.”

The silence between us felt different now.

Less uncomfortable.

More familiar.

Then he said something I never expected.

“I’m sorry.”

I froze.

“What?”

He looked annoyed.

Not at me.

At himself.

“I said I’m sorry.”

I stared.

“Did Massimo Pascale just apologize?”

“Don’t make it a moment.”

“I’m absolutely making it a moment.”

He almost smiled.

Almost.

But then his expression softened.

“I put you in danger.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No, Massimo.”

I stepped closer.

“You didn’t.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand more than you think.”

He looked away.

“I should have kept you away.”

“Maybe.”

That answer surprised him.

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

He didn’t answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

Because somewhere along the way, protecting me had become more important than protecting himself.

---

That afternoon, I received a phone call from Camila.

I stepped outside into the garden to answer.

“Tessa.”

Her voice immediately told me something was wrong.

“What happened?”

“Are you safe?”

I looked back at the mansion.

“Yes.”

“Tell me the truth.”

“I am.”

A pause.

Then:

“You need to leave.”

My stomach tightened.

“Camila.”

“No. Listen to me.”

Her voice became urgent.

“I know who Massimo Pascale is. I know what kind of world he comes from.”

“He’s injured.”

“That doesn’t make him harmless.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

The question hurt because it was fair.

“I’m not leaving him.”

Silence.

“Tessa…”

“I made a commitment.”

“You made a medical commitment.”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

I looked toward the mansion.

Toward the window where Massimo sat alone.

The man everyone called a monster.

The man who had protected me without hesitation.

“I don’t know.”

Because that was the truth.

I didn’t know when my job had become something more.

I didn’t know when concern had become attachment.

I didn’t know when Massimo Pascale stopped being just my patient.

But he had.

---

That evening, Massimo asked me something I never expected.

“Why didn’t you leave?”

I looked up.

“What?”

“After the threat.”

He looked at me.

“After last night.”

His voice lowered.

“Most people would have left.”

I sat down across from him.

“Maybe.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

I thought about giving him a professional answer.

Because I was hired.

Because I had a responsibility.

Because I was his therapist.

But none of those were the real reason.

So I told the truth.

“Because I don’t think you’re the person everyone says you are.”

His expression changed.

“You don’t know me.”

“I’m learning.”

“You should be afraid.”

“Maybe I should.”

“Then why aren’t you?”

I looked at him.

“Because every time I see the man everyone fears, I also see the man who is scared.”

The words hit him harder than I expected.

His face became still.

Almost emotionless.

But I knew him now.

I saw the pain.

“You see too much.”

“Maybe you hide too much.”

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then quietly, Massimo said:

“You’re dangerous, Tessa Fitzgerald.”

I smiled slightly.

“Because I talk too much?”

“No.”

His eyes stayed on mine.

“Because you make me want to become someone better.”

My heart skipped.

Because coming from Massimo Pascale…

That was almost a confession.

Almost.

---

That night, while the estate slept, Massimo made a decision.

A decision that would change everything.

He was done hiding me.

If his enemies wanted to reach him through me, they would have to understand one thing.

I was no longer just a therapist.

I was no longer just someone hired for three months.

I had become the one person he refused to lose.

And Massimo Pascale was willing to start a war to protect her.

But what neither of us knew…

Was that the person who betrayed him was closer than anyone imagined.

May you like

And when the truth came out…

It would destroy everything we had built.
