Chapter 4 - The Man Who Would Burn the World to Protect Her

The first time I saw Massimo Pascale smile, I thought it was an accident.
The second time, I realized it was something much more dangerous.
It was becoming normal.
And that scared both of us.
Because people like Massimo were not supposed to change.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
A man built from power, control, and fear was not supposed to wake up one morning and suddenly become someone who looked forward to a rehabilitation session.
But every morning at seven o’clock, I walked into that mansion.
And every morning, Massimo was waiting.
Sometimes he pretended he wasn’t.
Sometimes he would sit by the window pretending to read reports while secretly watching the clock.
Sometimes he would complain about my methods for an entire hour.
But he never asked me to leave.
That was progress.
For a man like Massimo Pascale, allowing someone to stay was almost the same as admitting they mattered.
And that was something he had spent his entire life avoiding.
---
One month after I arrived at the Pascale estate, I noticed something strange.
The house had become quieter.
Not physically.
There were still guards outside.
Still security meetings.
Still people moving through the halls with serious expressions.
But something had changed.
Massimo had changed.
Before, every room felt like it belonged to him.
Now, sometimes, it felt like he was simply existing inside it.
The difference was subtle.
But I saw it.
Because rehabilitation wasn’t only about muscles and movement.
It was about identity.
When someone loses their ability to move, they don’t only lose physical independence.
They lose pieces of who they believe they are.
And Massimo had lost the biggest piece.
The man who controlled everything had suddenly been forced to depend on others.
That was his real injury.
Not his spine.
His pride.
---
“You’re distracted.”
Massimo’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up from my notes.
“I’m working.”
“No.”
He looked at me from his wheelchair.
“You’re thinking about something else.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“Since when did you become an expert on my thoughts?”
“Since you started making the same expression every time you’re worried.”
I blinked.
I didn’t expect that.
“You notice my expressions?”
His face immediately became unreadable.
“I notice everything.”
I smiled slightly.
“That sounds exhausting.”
“It is.”
I laughed softly.
And then something unexpected happened.
He smiled.
Not a big smile.
Not the kind people gave for photographs.
A real one.
Small.
Almost shy.
I looked away quickly.
Because suddenly I felt like I had seen something I wasn’t supposed to see.
The real Massimo.
Not the man the world feared.
The man underneath.
---
Later that afternoon, I was reviewing his medical records when Elena entered the room.
She closed the door behind her.
That immediately caught my attention.
“What happened?”
Her expression was serious.
“You need to be careful.”
I frowned.
“About what?”
“About him.”
I looked toward the window where Massimo was outside with his security team.
“Massimo?”
“Yes.”
I almost laughed.
“Elena, I know he’s difficult.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
Her voice lowered.
“He is changing.”
I looked at her.
“That’s good.”
“For you, maybe.”
I didn’t understand.
“Elena.”
She sighed.
“You don’t know what he was like before.”
“I know enough.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You don’t.”
She sat down.
“Massimo Pascale was not just a powerful man. He was a man people feared because he made decisions without emotion.”
I listened.
“He trusted nobody. He showed no weakness. He never apologized.”
“That sounds lonely.”
Elena looked at me.
“It was.”
The sadness in her voice surprised me.
“You care about him.”
She looked away.
“I’ve worked for this family for twenty years.”
That was not an answer.
But it was enough.
---
That evening, I stayed later than usual.
Massimo was still in his office.
I found him staring at old documents.
Not business documents.
Photographs.
He quickly closed the folder when he noticed me.
“Privacy.”
I smiled.
“Interesting. You’re asking for privacy after spending three weeks analyzing every detail of my life.”
“That’s different.”
“How?”
“Because I’m me.”
I crossed my arms.
“That is the most Massimo answer possible.”
For a moment, I thought he would become angry.
Instead, he sighed.
“You don’t know when to stop.”
“No.”
“That should bother me.”
“Does it?”
He looked at me.
“No.”
The honesty surprised both of us.
Silence filled the room.
Then I asked:
“Who are they?”
He looked at the closed folder.
“My family.”
I waited.
“My mother died when I was young.”
His voice changed.
Softer.
“She was the only person who ever believed there was something good in me.”
I didn’t speak.
“My father believed kindness was weakness.”
He looked down.
“He taught me how to survive.”
“And what did it cost you?”
His eyes lifted.
For a moment, I thought he would refuse to answer.
Instead, he said:
“Everything.”
That one word carried years of pain.
---
The next morning, everything changed.
I arrived at seven like always.
But the atmosphere was different.
The guards were tense.
Elena looked worried.
And Massimo was not in the rehabilitation room.
I immediately knew something was wrong.
I found him in his office.
He was on the phone.
His expression was cold.
The expression everyone else knew.
The old Massimo.
The dangerous one.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
But somehow more frightening than shouting.
“You don’t touch my people.”
A pause.
“I said no.”
He ended the call.
Then he noticed me.
The coldness disappeared.
Only slightly.
“Tessa.”
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
I stared at him.
“Don’t lie to me.”
His eyebrows lifted.
“You’re becoming demanding.”
“You’re becoming predictable.”
For a second, he almost smiled.
Then he looked away.
“There was a problem.”
“What kind of problem?”
“A business problem.”
I remembered our agreement.
No questions.
But something in his expression told me this wasn’t just business.
“Are you safe?”
The question came out before I could stop it.
Massimo looked at me.
Not because of the question.
Because someone had asked.
Not about his power.
Not about his money.
Not about his reputation.
About him.
“I’m always safe.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Silence.
Then quietly:
“Yes.”
I nodded.
“Good.”
He studied me.
“You were worried.”
I looked away.
“I’m your therapist.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
I didn’t answer.
Because the truth was becoming harder to ignore.
Somewhere between helping him stand again and teaching him to trust again…
I had started caring.
And that was dangerous.
---
That night, the first threat arrived.
Not to Massimo.
To me.
I found the envelope outside my apartment door when I returned home.
No name.
No address.
Just a single sentence written inside.
Stop trying to save a man who was never meant to be saved.
My hands went cold.
Because whoever sent it knew who I was.
They knew where I lived.
They knew I was connected to Massimo.
I should have been terrified.
Instead, one thought entered my mind.
Not about myself.
About him.
Massimo Pascale had spent his entire life protecting himself from enemies.
But now someone had found a new way to hurt him.
Through me.
And for the first time, I understood something terrifying.
I wasn’t just treating Massimo Pascale anymore.
I had become the one thing his enemies could use against him.
May you like
The one thing he had never planned for.
The one person he couldn’t afford to lose.
