Chapter 5

The hospital cameras showed Dr. Warren pushing Lily through a service exit in a wheelchair.

Lily’s head rested against one shoulder.

She had been drugged.

A gray ambulance waited outside.

It left six minutes before I reached the empty room.

Marcus activated a federal kidnapping response.

Roadblocks went up across the city.

I called Elise.

She answered on the third ring.

“Where is my daughter?”

“You should be more concerned about what she remembers.”

“If you hurt her—”

“You cannot threaten me, Ethan. Your signature funded my research.”

“You forged it.”

“Then prove it.”

A weak voice sounded behind her.

“Daddy.”

I gripped the phone.

“Lily, I’m coming.”

Elise ended the call.

Technicians traced the signal to the industrial district.

The ambulance was found abandoned inside a warehouse.

A bloody hospital bracelet lay on the floor.

The blood was not Lily’s.

It belonged to a security guard who tried to stop the abduction.

Agents searched the building.

They found a tunnel connected to an old subway maintenance line.

Elise had prepared the escape route years earlier.

Marcus examined the files from Conrad’s vault.

One listed a facility called Haven House.

Officially, it was a rehabilitation center for children recovering from severe trauma.

In reality, it had been used for illegal drug trials.

The address pointed to an abandoned school outside the city.

Federal vehicles surrounded it before sunset.

I rode with Marcus.

“You stay behind the entry team,” he warned.

“That is my daughter.”

“And charging into an armed facility could leave her without a father.”

The agents entered first.

Gunfire erupted from the second floor.

I heard Lily scream through an open window.

Training meant nothing after that.

I followed the team inside.

The hallways smelled of bleach and damp concrete.

Medical beds stood inside former classrooms.

Names had been scratched from the doors.

We found Elise in an upstairs laboratory.

She held Lily against her chest with a syringe near her neck.

“Come closer, and I inject her.”

Lily’s eyes met mine.

She looked terrified.

But she was awake.

“Elise,” I said, “Conrad abandoned you.”

“He is coming.”

“He left the country.”

“You’re lying.”

“He made you take Lily because he needed time to escape.”

Her hand trembled.

Lily watched the syringe.

Then she stomped on Elise’s foot and dropped to the floor.

I lunged.

Elise tried to inject her, but I caught her wrist.

Marcus pulled Lily away while agents restrained the doctor.

I took my daughter into my arms.

“You came.”

“I promised.”

Agents searched Haven House.

In a basement archive, they discovered records for more than sixty children.

Several had died during unauthorized trials.

The foundation’s money paid doctors to alter death certificates and families to remain silent.

Conrad’s organization was larger than Nora’s crimes.

He had spent years experimenting on vulnerable children while using our family’s reputation as protection.

Elise agreed to cooperate.

She admitted prescribing drugs that weakened my memory and judgment.

Nora added small amounts to my tea.

The poison Lily stopped me from drinking was different.

It would have caused cardiac arrest within minutes.

After my death, Nora planned to produce the forged will and take control of Lily’s trust.

“What would have happened to Lily?” I asked.

Elise looked down.

“Conrad wanted her transferred here.”

“For experiments?”

“She had already received several compounds while imprisoned.”

Rage burned through me.

Doctors performed new tests.

Lily’s liver showed damage, but they believed she would recover.

Her memories might return slowly.

One returned that night.

She remembered Conrad visiting her after Amelia’s death.

“He asked where Mommy hid the red book.”

“What red book?”

“She said it had every child’s real name.”

The files from Haven House used numbers instead of names.

Amelia had created a master list to reunite victims with their families.

Lily remembered hiding the book before Nora locked her away.

“Where?”

“In Mommy’s garden.”

Amelia’s garden had been destroyed two years earlier.

Nora ordered workers to replace it with a stone terrace for our wedding.

I returned to the estate with federal agents.

We broke through the terrace after midnight.

Beneath the stone, we found a metal container.

Inside was Amelia’s red book.

A passport rested on top of it.

It belonged to Conrad Vale.

A flight itinerary was tucked inside.

His plane would leave from a private coastal airfield at sunrise.

And Nora’s name appeared on the passenger list.
