Chapter 2

I watched the video three times.
Julian’s face remained on the screen.
My own brother had known Lily was alive.
He had attended her memorial.
He had stood beside me while I lowered an empty white coffin into the ground.
He had watched me collapse beside Amelia’s grave.
All that time, Lily had been locked inside my house.
“Where is Julian now?” Detective Maria Torres asked.
“London. He manages our European offices.”
“Call him.”
I placed the call on speaker.
Julian answered immediately.
“Ethan, I heard about Nora. Are you all right?”
“You knew Lily was alive.”
Silence.
Then he laughed nervously.
“What are you talking about?”
“We have video.”
The call ended.
Minutes later, company security reported that Julian had left his London apartment.
His private aircraft was being prepared.
Federal authorities stopped the plane before takeoff.
Julian was detained for questioning, but the video alone did not explain his role.
Nora refused to speak.
Victor demanded an attorney.
Lily was taken to the hospital.
Doctors found signs of long-term malnutrition, untreated fractures, and scars across her back.
I sat beside her while she slept.
Every injury felt like evidence of my failure.
She had been only a few rooms away from me.
“How did I not see her?” I asked.
Detective Torres stood near the window.
“Nora controlled the household staff. She changed schedules, sealed part of the servants’ wing, and told employees the child belonged to a worker.”
“I lived there.”
“You were traveling almost every week.”
That was true.
After Amelia died, I buried myself in Vale Industries.
Nora became my assistant.
She managed my home, meals, appointments, and medication.
Within a year, she became the woman everyone expected me to marry.
She isolated me so gradually that I mistook control for care.
Lily opened her eyes.
“Are the police taking me away?”
“No.”
“Nora said children who lie go to prison.”
“You told the truth.”
“What if you stop believing me?”
I took her hand.
“I won’t.”
She studied my face.
“Can I call you Daddy?”
Tears filled my eyes.
“You never need permission.”
Doctors collected a DNA sample.
The emergency test confirmed what the birthmark and locket had already told me.
Lily was my daughter.
She had survived.
But the report contained another discovery.
Traces of a sedative remained in her blood.
Dr. Patel explained that someone had been drugging her regularly.
“It may affect memory, attention, and emotional regulation,” she said. “Recovery will take time.”
Lily heard the word memory.
“I remember Mommy.”
“What do you remember?”
“She found papers in Nora’s room. She said she was calling the police.”
“Did Amelia tell you what the papers showed?”
“Money.”
Lily closed her eyes.
“Mommy said Nora was stealing from the children.”
Amelia had overseen the Vale Children’s Foundation.
After her death, millions of dollars disappeared from its accounts.
Auditors blamed accounting errors.
Julian convinced me not to investigate publicly because scandal might damage the charity.
Now I understood why.
Detective Torres received a call from the estate.
Police had searched Nora’s bedroom and found a hidden safe.
Inside were forged death certificates, sedatives, staff records, and photographs of Lily taken over four years.
There was also a copy of my will.
It named Nora as the primary beneficiary.
“I never signed that,” I said.
“The signature appears genuine.”
That morning, Nora had asked me to sign several wedding-related trust documents.
I remembered feeling dizzy afterward.
The tea Lily destroyed had not been the first thing Nora gave me.
She had been poisoning me slowly.
A nurse entered carrying a stuffed rabbit.
“This was delivered for Lily.”
No return name appeared on the package.
Lily hugged the rabbit.
Then she suddenly froze.
She squeezed its stomach.
A clicking sound came from inside.
Detective Torres cut the seam.
She removed a small recording device.
A man’s voice played.
“The phone does not belong to you. Return it, or the next grave will be real.”
Lily threw herself into my arms.
I held her as she shook.

Only hospital staff and police knew our location.
Someone inside the investigation was still working for Nora.
