Chapter 5

Rachel’s phone went silent.

I called back immediately.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Grace contacted Detective Moreno, the officer now handling Vanessa’s case.

Within an hour, police were working with authorities in Atlanta.

I paced the kitchen.

Mia sat beside my sister Claire.

“Is Mommy okay?”

“Yes.”

I had no idea.

But I couldn’t let fear swallow Mia again.

Detective Moreno called just after midnight.

“We located Rachel.”

“Is she safe?”

“Yes.”

I nearly collapsed.

“Who was the man?”

“His name is Eric Dawson.”

“Who is he?”

“Private security.”

“Working for Vanessa?”

“That’s what we’re investigating.”

Rachel agreed to speak with us by video.

Her face appeared on my laptop.

She looked exhausted.

“Daniel.”

“Tell me everything.”

Rachel explained that after she left, Vanessa arranged an apartment for her in Atlanta.

Eric Dawson handled security.

At first, Rachel believed I might come after her legally.

Vanessa sent screenshots supposedly showing messages from me.

Threats.

I never wrote them.

Then Vanessa gradually convinced Rachel that contacting Mia would make the custody situation worse.

“She said the court would see it as emotional interference.”

Grace shook her head.

“That makes no legal sense.”

“I know that now.”

Rachel wiped her face.

“But I was scared.”

“Did Vanessa ask you about the trust?”

Rachel frowned.

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

“When?”

“Before I left.”

“What did she ask?”

“If your mother had left money for Mia.”

Grace and I exchanged a look.

Rachel continued.

“She said she wanted to make sure Mia was protected if you became vindictive.”

I almost laughed at the cruelty of it.

Vanessa had framed theft as protection.

Then Rachel remembered something else.

“She made me sign documents.”

“What documents?”

“I thought they were temporary custody papers.”

Grace immediately asked for copies.

Rachel had photographed them before signing.

She emailed the images.

Grace opened the first one.

“This isn’t temporary custody.”

“What is it?”

“A waiver.”

“Of what?”

Grace looked at me.

“Parental claims involving certain financial decisions.”

Rachel stared at the screen.

“She tricked me.”

“Yes.”

Then we opened the second document.

It named Vanessa as emergency guardian if both parents were unavailable.

My hands curled into fists.

“She was building a path to Mia.”

Grace nodded.

Police interviewed Eric Dawson.

He claimed Vanessa hired him to “protect Rachel from an abusive ex-husband.”

Me.

She had shown him fake police reports.

Fake court documents.

Fake messages.

Eric believed the story.

At least at first.

Then he admitted Vanessa recently asked him to prevent Rachel from leaving Atlanta.

That was why he told her to hang up.

“Did he threaten her?” I asked.

“No physical threat,” Moreno said. “But he was following Vanessa’s instructions.”

“Where is he now?”

“Being questioned.”

Then Moreno lowered his voice.

“We found something else in Vanessa’s house.”

“What?”

“A calendar.”

My stomach tightened.

“Her plans?”

“Yes.”

One date was circled.

Next Friday.

Beside it, Vanessa had written:

D + R unavailable. M transfer final.

D.

Daniel.

R.

Rachel.

M.

Mia.

I stared at the page.

Grace whispered, “Whatever she planned, it involved removing both parents at the same time.”
