Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

We did not run far—only to a small, abandoned cottage hidden deep within the forest.

Elizabeth barred the door. She checked the windows. Then she sat at the rickety wooden table and motioned for us to join her. The torn page lay in the center.

“Julian will not come himself,” she said, tracing the names written there. “He will send men. And they will not bargain.”

Adrian leaned forward. “Tell us everything. From the very beginning. No more secrets.”

Elizabeth took a deep breath and began.

“Our father was a good man. But he trusted his brother. He gave Julian power. Responsibility. Access to everything.” She paused, pain crossing her face. “When we were twenty-one… our parents died. Julian told us it was an accident. We believed him. But then… things began to happen. Money vanished. Documents changed. People who questioned Julian disappeared.”

She folded her hands tightly.

“Victoria and I found the truth. Julian had been stealing from the family for years. Our parents discovered it. So he killed them. And he planned to kill us too—once he had complete control.”

“Why didn’t you go to the police?” I asked.

“Because Julian owned them. Every officer. Every judge. Every newspaper editor. We had no proof. And no one would believe two young women against a respected philanthropist.” She looked at Adrian. “So we swapped identities. Victoria married you. Became the public face of the family. And I disappeared. I lived in the shadows. I gathered evidence. I wrote the ledger.”

Adrian was quiet for a long time. “Victoria knew I might fall in love with her… thinking she was Elizabeth.”

“Victoria fell in love with you too. She meant to tell you. So many times. But she was afraid. If you knew the truth… Julian would know. And then he would have killed all of us.” Elizabeth reached across the table and touched his hand gently. “She loved you, Adrian. Truly. And she loved Mia more than life itself.”

Adrian looked away, swallowing hard. “And the night she died?”

“Julian confronted her. He told her he knew the truth. He gave her a choice—hand Mia over to him… or he would kill you both.” Elizabeth’s voice trembled. “She chose to die protecting you. She changed her will. She signed everything over to Mia… and then she took matters into her own hands.”

Elizabeth paused, wiping tears from her eyes.

“She poisoned herself. To make it look like illness. So Julian would not suspect. And before she lost consciousness… she sent for me. She gave me the ledger. She made me swear to protect Mia.”

I gasped. “She killed herself?”

“She sacrificed herself, Mia. To buy us time. To keep Julian from claiming you immediately. And it worked. He waited. He watched. He tried to find proof that she was not truly Elizabeth… so he could invalidate the will.”

Adrian gripped the table. “And Vanessa?”

“Julian sent her. To marry you. To search the house. To find the documents. To destroy the will.” Elizabeth looked at me. “Vanessa did not know the full truth. Julian told her Victoria was an imposter. That Mia had no right to the fortune. That she was helping restore justice.”

“And when Vanessa learned the truth?”

“She tried to bargain. That was her mistake. Julian does not bargain. He destroys.” Elizabeth stood up and walked to the window. “Vanessa is dead.”

The words hung heavy in the room.

“How do you know?” Adrian asked quietly.

“Because I saw it. Before I was captured. Julian’s men found her on the road. She tried to lead them away from us. And they killed her.” Elizabeth turned back to me. “She died trying to save you, Mia. In the end… she chose the right thing.”

My throat tightened. I thought of Vanessa standing over me by the pond. The hatred in her eyes. And then… the fear. The doubt. The way she had looked at me before she ran out the door.

“Did she really have to die?” I whispered.

“Julian leaves no loose ends,” Elizabeth said sadly. “And she knew too much.”

Silence filled the cottage. Outside, wind rustled through the trees. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked.

Adrian looked down at the page on the table. “Julian needs this page. Without it… he cannot move forward. His accomplices will abandon him.”

“Exactly,” Elizabeth said. “That is why he will not stop. He will burn this entire forest to the ground before he lets us expose him.”

“Then we do not wait for him to find us,” I said.

They both looked at me.

“We take the page to the people on this list,” I said, pointing to the names. “We tell them Julian is coming. We tell them he will expose them unless they help us.”

Adrian shook his head. “They work for him, Mia. They will hand us over.”

“Not if they are afraid,” I said. “Not if they believe Julian is sacrificing them to save himself.”

Elizabeth stared at me. Slowly, a smile touched her lips.

“She is right, Adrian. If we go to the authorities… Julian will bury us. But if we go to his own accomplices… and tell them Julian plans to cut them loose… they will turn on him.” She picked up the page. “It is dangerous. But it is the only way.”

Adrian looked at me, then at Elizabeth. Finally, he nodded.

“Then we do it. But we do it together. And we do it carefully.”

He stood up and walked to the window. Dawn was breaking. Gray light filtered through the trees.

“Today,” Adrian said quietly. “We end this. Once and for all.”
