Chapter 3 - THE SILENT PARTNER

Adrian didn’t sleep that night.

He sat in the armchair in Lily’s room, watching his daughter sleep, one hand resting protectively on the teddy bear beside her pillow. Every creak of the house sounded like footsteps. Every shadow looked like a person standing in the doorway.

Grace’s note kept playing in his head. There is someone else. She didn’t do this alone.

And that text—who had sent it? Vanessa was in police custody. She couldn’t have messaged him. Which meant… the accomplice was still free. Still watching.

At dawn, Adrian went downstairs. Clara was already in the kitchen, preparing breakfast. She looked up when he entered, her expression calm but watchful.

“Mr. Adrian, you look exhausted.”

“Did anyone come to the house last night?” he asked without preamble. “Any deliveries? Any phone calls? Any strangers asking questions?”

Clara frowned. “No. Nothing out of the ordinary. Why?”

Adrian hesitated. Should he tell her? Grace had said watch everyone. But Clara had saved Lily. She’d told him about the camera. She’d stood by them when it mattered.

Still… he held back.

“Just… checking,” he said vaguely. “Did anyone besides you and Grace know about Teddy? About the camera?”

Clara paused, thinking. “Grace told me. And she told Olivia. I don’t believe she told anyone else. Not even you, sir.”

Adrian nodded. That made sense. She hadn’t wanted him to know—she’d wanted it to remain hidden until the moment it was needed. Until Lily was in danger.

“Grace mentioned someone else,” Adrian said carefully. “In her notes. Someone working with Vanessa. Someone close.”

Clara’s face paled. “She told me something similar, once. She said Vanessa seemed to know too much. About schedules, about bank accounts, about when she’d be alone. But she couldn’t prove anything.”

Adrian leaned against the counter. “And you? Do you suspect anyone?”

Clara looked away, her hands tightening around the edge of the counter. “I have… suspicions. But they’re only suspicions, Mr. Adrian. I have no proof.”

“Tell me anyway.”

Clara took a breath. “It started shortly after Grace became ill. Suddenly, Vanessa was everywhere. She knew exactly when to visit, exactly what to say. She knew Grace’s medication schedule. She knew when Lily had doctor’s appointments. Information like that… it doesn’t leak on its own.”

“Who had access to it?”

Clara looked him in the eye. “Everyone in the household has access to some things. But full access? Everything? Only you, Grace, myself… and the family lawyer.”

Adrian went cold.

Arthur Penn. He’d been their family lawyer for twenty years. He’d handled Grace’s will. He’d set up the trust. He was the one person Adrian had trusted completely with every detail of their lives.

“Arthur,” Adrian whispered.

“I have no proof,” Clara repeated. “Only that Vanessa seemed to know things only Arthur should have known. Grace suspected too. That’s why she moved everything into Teddy’s memory card. She said… she said she couldn’t even trust the paperwork anymore.”

Adrian walked out of the kitchen without another word. He went straight to his study and pulled up Arthur’s contact information. He stared at the number, his heart hammering.

Could Arthur be the one? The man who had been like an uncle to his children? The man who had married him and Grace?

He picked up the phone. Before he could dial, it rang.

Arthur’s name lit up the screen.

Adrian answered slowly. “Arthur.”

“Adrian! Good heavens, have you seen the news? The police called me—Vanessa has been arrested! What on earth is happening over there?”

Arthur sounded genuinely shocked. Concerned. Upset.

Too concerned?

“I found evidence,” Adrian said carefully. “Hidden cameras. Recordings. Documents. Vanessa was trying to redirect Lily’s trust fund. She had help, Arthur. Someone who gave her access to information.”

Arthur was silent for a moment. Then his voice dropped. “Adrian… I need to speak to you. In person. Immediately. There are things I didn’t tell you. Things Grace asked me to keep confidential until…”

“Until what?”

“Until she was certain someone inside the circle was compromised. Adrian… I’ve been going through the trust records. Someone has been accessing them. Someone with full authority. Someone whose signature appears on documents I never prepared.”

“Whose signature?” Adrian asked, his stomach twisting.

“Mine,” Arthur said quietly. “Someone has been forging my name.”

Adrian gripped the phone. “Come to the house. Now.”

“I’m leaving my office this minute. I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

The call ended. Adrian stood in the center of his study, trying to process everything. Someone was forging Arthur’s signature. Someone had access to legal documents. Someone close enough to know everything.

If not Arthur… then who?

Twenty minutes later, Arthur arrived. He walked in carrying a heavy briefcase, his face lined with worry. He looked older than Adrian remembered.

They sat in the study. Arthur opened his case and spread documents across the desk.

“These are copies of trust transfers,” he said. “Each one signed with my name. Each one dated within the last three months. Adrian… I never signed these. And look at the recipient.”

Adrian leaned over. The funds were being transferred to an offshore account. The name listed as beneficiary…

“Lily’s name,” Adrian whispered. “But that’s impossible.”

“Exactly. It’s a loophole. If someone with legal authority—someone the courts trust—declared Lily emotionally unstable and appointed themselves guardian, they could legally transfer her own money to her own name… and then withdraw it at will. Vanessa was planning to drain the account and disappear, leaving Lily with nothing.”

Adrian stared at the documents. “And who has the authority to do that?”

Arthur hesitated. “Grace’s will appointed you as sole guardian. But there was a second name listed as backup. In case something happened to both of you.”

Adrian froze. “Who?”

Arthur looked up, his expression grave. “Grace’s sister. Elena.”

Adrian’s mind reeled. Elena? Grace’s own sister? The girls’ aunt?

“That’s impossible,” Adrian said. “Elena lives abroad. She barely visits.”

“Does she?” Arthur pulled out another paper. “These transfers were authorized by Elena. Using her legal power of attorney. Adrian… she’s been in the country for six months. She’s been working with Vanessa.”

Adrian felt as though the floor had dropped out from beneath him.

Grace’s sister. Her own blood.

He thought back to everything. The hospital records. The insider knowledge. The way Vanessa had fit so perfectly into their lives. She hadn’t done it alone. Elena had been pulling strings from the shadows.

“But why?” Adrian whispered. “They were sisters.”

Arthur leaned forward. “Grace changed her will shortly before she died. She left everything to Lily—every asset, every share, every dollar—held in trust until Lily turns twenty-five. If anything happened to Lily… everything goes to Elena.”

Adrian stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly across the floor.

Elena didn’t just want the money.

She wanted Lily gone.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, his hands shaking.

Another text. Same unknown number.

*You’re getting closer. But now she knows you’re onto her. Watch Lily. Watch Olivia. Watch everyone.*

Adrian looked at Arthur. At the documents. At the teddy bear sitting on his desk.

Grace had known. She’d suspected her own sister. That was why she’d hidden everything inside Teddy. That was why she’d written that warning.

*Be careful who you trust.*

Adrian looked up at Arthur. “Where is Elena now?”

Arthur checked his watch. “She was supposed to fly back to Paris this morning. But her flight was canceled. She’s still in the city.”

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

“Arthur—who does Elena know at the police station?”

Arthur paled. “She’s been a consultant for the district attorney’s office for years. She has contacts everywhere.”

Which meant… Elena could get to Vanessa. Could silence her before she talked. Could make sure Vanessa took all the blame. And then… Elena would be free to come after his daughters.

Adrian grabbed his coat. “Stay here with the girls. Don’t let anyone in. Not anyone. I’m going to the police station.”

“Adrian, that’s dangerous—”

“Elena is Grace’s sister. She knows us. She knows our routines. She knows where the girls are vulnerable. And she has every reason to make sure Lily doesn’t live to see twenty-five.”

Adrian walked to the door. He paused, looking back at the teddy bear sitting on his desk.

Grace had protected Lily once.

Now it was his turn.

He pulled the door open and stepped out into the hall.

And stopped dead.

Standing in the open front doorway, calmly walking into his house as if she belonged there, was Elena.

She smiled. Warm. Familiar. Deadly.

“Hello, Adrian,” she said. “I believe we need to talk.”
