Chapter 9 - THE HEIRLOOM

The private hospital room was quiet, save for the steady beeping of the heart monitor.
It was 4:00 PM.
Luca stood by the window, holding Mateo in his arms. The boy was awake now, quietly sucking his thumb, staring at the woman in the hospital bed.
Elena.
She was pale, hooked up to an IV, bandaged from the attack at the motel. But she was smiling.
Luca had mobilized his entire network to find her and bring her to the best private doctor in the city.
I stood near the door, feeling like an intruder in a family reunion.
“He’s gotten so big,” Elena whispered, tears sliding down her cheeks. She reached out a trembling hand.
Luca stepped forward and gently lowered Mateo onto the edge of the bed.
“Mommy!” Mateo cried, throwing his arms around her neck.
Elena buried her face in his dark hair, sobbing. “I’m so sorry, baby. I’m so sorry I had to leave you at the home. I was just trying to keep you safe.”
Luca watched them, a heavy sorrow in his eyes.
“You should have told me, Elena,” Luca said softly. “I would have torn the city apart to protect you both.”
Elena looked up at him. “Daniel was the one who warned me. He said you ordered the hit on the baby because you didn't want a child tying you down. I didn't know who to trust. So I ran.”
Luca closed his eyes, the betrayal of his closest friend still an open wound. “Daniel is dead. Vanessa is gone. It’s over, Elena. You never have to run again.”
Elena stroked Mateo’s cheek. She looked exhausted. Beaten down by five years of terror.
Then, her eyes shifted to me.
“Olivia,” she said softly.
I stepped forward hesitantly. “Yes, ma'am?”
“You answered the phone,” Elena said, her voice filled with a profound gratitude. “You saved my son. You saved my husband.” She corrected herself. “My ex-husband.”
“I just did what was right,” I said, looking down at my worn shoes. I was still wearing my maid's uniform, stained with dirt and sweat.
Elena reached up and unclasped a thin gold necklace from her own throat. It held a small, intricate pendant of the Virgin Mary.
“This has been in the Moretti family for four generations,” Elena said, holding it out to me. “Luca’s mother gave it to me on our wedding day. It’s meant for the woman who protects the family.”
My breath caught. “I can't take that. It belongs to you.”
“I’m not part of this family anymore, Olivia,” Elena smiled gently. “I just want peace. I want to move to the coast. I want to heal.” She looked at Luca. “Mateo needs his father. He needs the protection only you can provide, Luca. He belongs with you now.”
Luca’s throat bobbed. He nodded slowly.
Elena looked back at me and pressed the gold necklace into my palm.
“And he’s going to need a mother who is brave enough to stand up to monsters,” she whispered.
Tears burned my eyes. I closed my fingers around the warm gold.
Later that evening, we returned to the mansion.
The engagement decorations had been torn down. The house was quiet.
I walked into the kitchen, intending to clock out and figure out what to do with my life now that my job was inevitably over.
But Luca was waiting for me.
He was sitting at the island counter, watching me walk in.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“My shift is over, Mr. Moretti,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
He stood up, walking slowly toward me. “I don't want you to call me that anymore.”
He reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair behind my ear, his thumb grazing the fading bruise on my cheek.
“Mateo asked where you were,” Luca said softly. “He wouldn't go to sleep until he knew you were still in the house.”
My heart did a painful flip. “I can go say goodnight to him.”
“Olivia,” Luca interrupted, stepping closer. The space between us vanished. I could smell his cologne, feel the heat radiating from him. “I don't want you to just say goodnight. I want you to stay.”
I looked up into his dark, intense eyes. “As a maid?”
He smiled, a genuine, breathtaking smile. “As my partner. As the woman who saved my life. If you’ll have me.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the gold watch he had given me earlier.
“Time,” Luca whispered. “I want to give you all of mine.”
He leaned down, and when his lips met mine, the last seventy-two hours of terror melted away. It was a promise. A new beginning.

Mateo was safe. The monsters were gone.
And I finally had a family.
