Chapter 3 - The Boy Who Touched Her HairVictoria stared at the approval form as if it had suddenly become impossible to read.

Richard Hayes.

Her father's signature was the final obstacle standing between Grace and the surgery that could save her life.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

The only sounds in the hospital room were the slow beeping of the heart monitor and Ethan quietly crying beside his mother's bed.

Victoria looked at the doctor.

"How long do we have?"

The doctor answered honestly.

"If authorization isn't received within the next few hours..."

He paused.

"...we may lose the opportunity."

Victoria didn't wait to hear the rest.

She turned and hurried out of the room.

Forty minutes later...

The elevator doors opened onto the top floor of Hayes Global Holdings.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked downtown Chicago.

Executives in tailored suits stepped aside as Victoria walked through the reception area without saying a word.

Everyone recognized the expression on her face.

Something was terribly wrong.

Richard Hayes was inside the boardroom reviewing financial reports when the doors swung open.

He looked up.

"Victoria."

She didn't sit.

She placed the insurance file on the polished table.

"Approve it."

Richard glanced at the folder.

His expression barely changed.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Victoria froze.

"You already knew."

"I did."

"You knew Grace was my sister."

Richard folded his hands.

"Yes."

The room felt colder.

"You let me believe I was an only child."

"I protected you."

Victoria shook her head.

"You lied to me."

"I gave you a future."

"You stole my past."

Richard stood and walked toward the window.

"When your adoptive mother and I found you, you had nothing."

"You were frightened."

"Undernourished."

"You barely spoke."

Victoria's voice cracked.

"I had a sister."

Richard remained silent.

"You separated us."

"We adopted the child the court allowed us to adopt."

"You never fought for Grace."

Richard slowly turned around.

"The agency wouldn't approve two children."

"You had serious medical problems."

"We could barely qualify for one adoption."

Victoria felt tears burning in her eyes.

"So you chose me."

"We chose the child we were legally allowed to save."

"But after that..."

She stepped closer.

"...you stopped Grace from finding me."

Richard lowered his eyes.

"I believed it was kinder."

"Kinder?"

"You offered her money to disappear."

"I offered her a fresh start."

"You offered her silence."

Neither of them noticed that several board members had quietly stopped working.

Every person in the room was listening.

Victoria took a deep breath.

"Grace is dying."

Richard didn't answer.

"The surgery is ready."

Still nothing.

"Your signature can save her."

Richard looked out across the city.

"For twenty-five years..."

"I convinced myself I had done the right thing."

Victoria waited.

"I told myself reopening old wounds would only create more pain."

His voice became quieter.

"I never imagined she'd still be looking for you."

Victoria whispered,

"She never stopped being my sister."

At that moment...

Richard's assistant hurried into the room carrying a tablet.

"Sir..."

He looked nervous.

"You need to see this."

Richard frowned.

"What is it?"

"It's everywhere."

The assistant turned the screen around.

News stations across the country were broadcasting live from Mercy General Hospital.

A reporter stood outside the emergency entrance.

"Tonight, the touching reunion between business executive Victoria Hayes and a homeless mother claiming to be her biological sister has captured national attention."

Video clips played.

Ethan in the hotel lobby.

The silver locket.

Victoria rushing into the hospital.

Doctors refusing treatment because insurance approval was still pending.

The story spread rapidly across social media.

Millions of people were watching.

One headline filled the screen.

INSURANCE COMPANY DENIES LIFE-SAVING SURGERY TO CEO'S SISTER.

Richard slowly lowered the tablet.

For the first time in decades...

He looked frightened.

Not because of reporters.

Because he finally saw what his choices looked like through someone else's eyes.

Back at the hospital...

Grace's condition worsened.

Doctors surrounded her bed.

Ethan stood outside the room, holding the silver locket tightly.

He looked at the engraved initials.

V & G.

He whispered,

"You promised we'd find her."

A nurse gently rested a hand on his shoulder.

"Your mom kept that promise."

Ethan looked toward the operating room doors.

"I don't want to lose her."

Neither did anyone else.

Victoria's phone rang.

The caller ID read:

Dad.

She answered immediately.

"Yes?"

Richard's voice sounded older than she had ever heard it.

"I'm coming."

Twenty minutes later...

He walked into the hospital carrying the authorization documents himself.

Reporters surged forward.

Microphones surrounded him.

"Mr. Hayes!"

"Did you know Grace Morgan was your daughter's sister?"

"Why was the claim denied?"

Richard stopped.

He looked directly into the cameras.

Then, without prepared remarks or lawyers beside him, he spoke.

"I owe the public the truth."

The hallway fell silent.

"Twenty-five years ago..."

"My wife and I adopted a little girl."

"We believed we were giving her a better life."

He swallowed hard.

"But in protecting one child..."

"I failed another."

Victoria looked at him.

He continued.

"I cannot change the past."

"But I refuse to let pride decide the future."

He signed the authorization papers.

Then handed them directly to the surgeon.

"Please..."

"Save her."

The surgeon didn't waste another second.

He turned and ran toward the operating suite.

The operating room doors closed.

A red light above them illuminated.

Everyone waited.

One hour.

Then two.

Finally...

After what felt like forever...

The doors opened.

The lead surgeon removed his mask.

Victoria couldn't bring herself to ask.

Ethan gripped her hand so tightly it almost hurt.

The surgeon smiled.

"The operation was successful."

Ethan burst into tears.

Victoria closed her eyes in relief.

Richard quietly sat down in the hallway, covering his face with both hands.

For the first time in twenty-five years...

He allowed himself to cry.

But while the family embraced outside the operating room, one mystery still remained.

Grace had spent decades searching for Victoria.

Yet no one knew...

Who had secretly kept track of both sisters all those years...

And who had anonymously paid for Ethan's shelter, school supplies, and food every single month without ever leaving a name.
