Chapter 4

Flames climbed the curtains.

Mom screamed as burning fabric fell across the desk.

I wrapped Dad’s old coat around her shoulders and pulled her toward the hallway.

The front stairs were already covered in smoke.

My security guards shouted from outside.

The study windows were reinforced glass.

A metal chair cracked the first layer but did not break through.

Mom began coughing.

“There’s another way,” she gasped.

Dad had built an emergency passage behind the bookcase after Florence threatened us.

Mom pressed a hidden release.

The shelf moved several inches.

We crawled into a narrow corridor while the study burned behind us.

The passage led to the garage.

My guards pulled us outside seconds before the roof partially collapsed.

Fire investigators found an incendiary device near the kitchen.

Security footage showed a man in a delivery uniform entering through the service gate.

Facial recognition identified him as Lewis Grant, Mercer Dynamics’ head of security.

Jonathan had hired him two years earlier.

Federal agents arrested Lewis at the airport.

His suitcase contained cash and a passport under another name.

During questioning, he admitted Florence ordered the fire.

She wanted Dad’s evidence destroyed.

“Did she order Charles Vale’s death?” the investigator asked.

Lewis hesitated.

Then he requested a lawyer.

Florence and Jonathan were taken into federal custody.

Their attorneys argued that the accusations came from a bitter bride seeking revenge.

The hotel video made that defense difficult.

The fire recording destroyed it completely.

Federal agents restored Dad’s hidden camera file.

The footage showed Jonathan starting the laboratory fire.

Florence stood nearby, giving instructions.

Jonathan was twenty-four years old.

He had not been an innocent son following his mother.

He was already her partner.

Mercer Dynamics’ board suspended him.

Florence was banned from company property.

The board asked Vanguard to reconsider the investment under new leadership.

I refused.

“We will not place investor money into a company built on stolen technology and false testing.”

Thousands of employees could lose their jobs.

That mattered.

But saving them could not mean rewarding fraud.

Vanguard offered temporary financing only if Mercer Dynamics entered court-supervised restructuring, removed the Mercer family, compensated injured workers, and returned Dad’s patents.

The board accepted.

Jonathan learned about the agreement during his detention hearing.

He stared at me across the courtroom.

“You stole my company.”

“You stole the technology used to build it.”

“My father created Mercer Dynamics.”

“Your father created the name. Mine created the product.”

Florence’s attorney requested her release because of her age and community ties.

Then prosecutors presented the recording of the wedding night.

They presented the fire at Mom’s house.

They presented Lewis’s confession.

The judge denied bail.

Mom moved into my penthouse temporarily.

Living together exposed every wound we had avoided.

She criticized my security.

I accused her of hiding behind fear.

She accused me of becoming cold like Dad.

One night, our argument became unbearable.

“You think money makes you untouchable,” she shouted.

“No. I learned exactly how vulnerable money makes people.”

“You hid your identity from Jonathan.”

“I hid it because the last man I dated sold photographs of me.”

“You tested Jonathan instead of trusting him.”

“He hit me because I refused to wash his family’s underwear. Knowing my job would not have improved his character.”

Mom stopped.

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

“I thought silence protected you.”

“It protected Florence.”

The truth settled between us.

Mom finally gave federal investigators a complete statement.

She surrendered every letter, photograph, and threat.

Then she revealed Dad had stored his last patent in an independent trust.

The beneficiary was not me.

It was the custodian injured in the laboratory fire.

Dad had wanted the man’s family compensated.

The patent was worth more than Mercer Dynamics itself.

Before the trust could be secured, the custodian’s daughter disappeared.

Her name was Lily Grant.

She had worked at Mercer Dynamics under a different surname.

She was also Maya’s closest friend.

Maya received a message from Lily’s phone.

WITHDRAW YOUR TESTIMONY OR SHE DIES.

The message included a photograph of Lily tied to a chair.

Behind her was the wedding hotel’s laundry room.

Jonathan had begun our marriage with a bucket of dirty clothes.

Now his last witness was imprisoned among them.
