Chapter 6 - VANESSA SAID SHE WAS PROTECTING MEHer first full statement through counsel lasted four hours.

She admitted:

Creating VSA.

Submitting false household invoices.

Paying Voss.

Buying jewelry for conversion.

Falsifying some service descriptions.

Cutting household child expenses to make account patterns “look believable.”

She denied knowingly participating in medication theft.

Evidence complicated that.

Messages showed she knew boxes were not supposed to be at the house.

One text to Voss:

If Lucas finds out product passed through here, I’m done.

That suggested awareness.

Then her explanation:

“I was protecting Lucas.”

I wanted to shout.

Instead I asked:

“From what?”

“Your father’s scandal.”

“My father is dead.”

“Your company isn’t.”

“You could have told me.”

“I thought you would go after Voss.”

“I would have called counsel.”

“He said that would trigger release.”

“So?”

“He said hospitals would cancel contracts.”

“Did you verify that?”

“No.”

“You risked our children based on one criminal’s prediction.”

Her face broke.

“Yes.”

Then:

“I kept thinking one more payment.”

Of course.

One more.

Then finished.

One more.

Then safe.

Fear creates its own deadlines.
