Chapter 4

Daniel walked back into the sanctuary with me beside him.

Rachel followed until Uncle Marcus, one of Daniel’s older cousins, stepped into the aisle and blocked her.

“Not another step,” he said.

Rachel glared at him.

“This is family business.”

He looked at the torn back of my dress.

“No. This is police business if Lily wants it to be.”

The church fell silent again.

Daniel stood before the altar.

His voice shook, but it did not break.

“I owe everyone an explanation.”

Patricia whispered, “Daniel, don’t.”

He looked at his mother.

“That is exactly how we got here.”

Then he faced the guests.

“My sister Rachel intentionally damaged Lily’s wedding dress before the ceremony.”

Gasps.

Whispers.

Phones lifting.

Emma stepped beside me and held up her phone.

“We have video and audio proof,” she said.

Rachel screamed from the side aisle.

“She slapped me!”

Daniel turned toward her.

“Yes. After you ripped her dress.”

Some guests looked at Rachel’s cheek.

Then at my torn gown.

Their faces changed.

Rachel clutched her envelope like a shield.

Daniel held up the forged papers.

“She also attempted to present fake documents claiming Lily was planning to take my money.”

He looked at the papers.

“She even forged the wrong last name.”

A few shocked laughs escaped from the back rows.

Rachel’s face twisted with humiliation.

“You’re making fun of me?”

“No,” Daniel said. “I’m exposing you.”

Richard stood.

“I think we should pause the wedding.”

That was the wrong thing to say.

My mother stepped forward.

“With respect, Richard, the wedding was paused when your daughter tore my child’s dress.”

The church went dead quiet.

My mother was usually gentle.

Soft-spoken.

The kind of woman who apologized when someone bumped into her.

But now her voice cut like glass.

“I spent months helping Lily sew that gown. Your daughter ripped it out of jealousy. Your family knew she had a history of this behavior. And now you want a pause?”

Richard looked ashamed.

Patricia cried silently.

Daniel took my hand.

“Lily gets to decide what happens next.”

Every eye turned to me.

My heart pounded.

I looked at the guests.

At my mother.

At Emma.

At Rachel, shaking with rage.

At Daniel, terrified I would leave and determined not to trap me if I did.

That mattered.

“I came here to marry Daniel,” I said. “Not his sister. Not his parents. Not a family secret.”

Daniel’s hand tightened around mine.

“I will continue,” I said, “if Rachel leaves. Now.”

Rachel laughed.

“You need security to remove me? From my own brother’s wedding?”

The side doors opened.

Two venue security guards entered.

Emma must have called them.

Bless Emma.

Rachel’s face went white.

“You wouldn’t.”

Daniel’s voice was low.

“I already did.”

The guards approached.

Rachel backed away.

“Mom!”

Patricia cried but did not move.

“Dad!”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Go, Rachel.”

She looked at him like he had betrayed her.

Then her expression turned vicious.

“You want the truth? Fine.”

She pointed at me.

“He only proposed because Dad paid him to.”

The church exploded into whispers.

I froze.

Daniel’s hand went slack in mine.

“What?” I whispered.

Rachel smiled through tears.

“There. Ask him. Ask Daddy how much he promised Daniel if he married the perfect little bride and stopped embarrassing this family.”

Daniel turned slowly toward Richard.

“Dad?”

Richard’s face had gone gray.

Patricia whispered, “Rachel, no.”

My stomach dropped.

Daniel released my hand.

Not to leave me.

To face his father.

“What is she talking about?”

Richard did not answer.

The silence was worse than denial.

I felt the church tilt around me.

May you like

Rachel smiled like a woman watching a fire spread.

“See, Lily? You thought I was the only liar in this family.”
