Chapter 2

The ballroom emptied under police supervision.

Detectives collected phones, photographed the forged documents, and searched Vanessa’s dressing room.

They found three different fake pregnancy bellies.

One made her appear four months pregnant.

Another matched the size she wore during our engagement photographs.

The final balloon had been strapped beneath her wedding dress.

Vanessa had staged an entire pregnancy for almost eight months.

She brought me to fake medical appointments.

She showed me ultrasound pictures.

She even arranged a gender-reveal party.

Every image had been stolen from another woman’s social-media account.

I sat beside Noah while Detective Maya Brooks interviewed him.

“When did you hear Vanessa talking about your mother?” she asked.

“Last Tuesday.”

“Where?”

“In Daddy’s office.”

Noah explained that Vanessa and Eric entered the room while he was hiding beneath the desk.

He had gone there because Vanessa took away his tablet and threatened to send him to boarding school.

The old phone had belonged to Noah’s mother, Emily.

He found it inside a drawer and turned on the camera when he heard Vanessa approaching.

“What did they say?” Brooks asked.

Noah looked at me.

“Uncle Eric said Mommy’s car worked fine until he fixed it.”

My chest tightened.

Emily died two years earlier when her car crashed through a bridge barrier.

Police concluded that her brakes had failed.

Eric owned the repair shop that serviced her car one day before the crash.

I had never questioned him.

He was my brother.

I trusted him with everything.

Vanessa entered our lives three months after Emily’s death.

She worked as a grief counselor at Noah’s school.

She brought meals to our house.

She listened when I talked about losing Emily.

Now I realized Eric had probably sent her.

Detective Brooks ordered officers to find him.

His phone had been abandoned in the ballroom bathroom.

His car remained outside.

Security footage showed him entering a service hallway during the ceremony.

No camera captured him leaving.

Police searched the hotel.

They found his jacket beside an open loading dock.

He had escaped inside a delivery truck.

Noah suddenly reached for my hand.

“Dad, I’m sorry I popped the baby.”

“There was no baby.”

“I thought maybe there was a real one under the balloon.”

The fear in his voice crushed me.

“You were trying to protect us.”

“Vanessa said you would hate me if I told.”

“I could never hate you.”

“She said you wanted a new family.”

I pulled him close.

“You are my family.”

Detective Brooks examined the phone again.

Most recordings had been made during the previous month.

One video showed Vanessa placing pills inside my coffee.

Another showed her removing medication from my bathroom.

I had suffered headaches, confusion, and exhaustion for weeks.

Vanessa blamed wedding stress.

A hospital blood test found a sedative in my system.

The dose was not immediately fatal, but it could impair judgment.

The forged will had been signed during that same period.

I did not remember signing it.

Susan reviewed the document and confirmed that my signature looked real.

Someone had recorded me signing blank business papers and transferred the signature onto the will.

Vanessa would inherit the estate after our marriage.

Eric would receive control of my company.

Noah would be placed in a private facility.

The plan was nearly complete.

Then police found something inside the fake belly.

A tiny tracking device had been sewn into the rubber.

It transmitted to a phone registered under Emily’s name.

That phone was still active.

Detective Brooks traced the signal.

It came from inside my own house.

Someone was waiting there.
