Chapter 3: The Secret Anna Took With Her

I stared at Michael like he had just spoken a language I didn’t understand.

Anna’s brother stood in the doorway of Lily’s hospital room, his face pale and exhausted. He looked older than the last time I had seen him. Not older in years.

Older in guilt.

“What did you say?”” I asked.

Michael swallowed.

“Anna’s death wasn’t an accident.””

The machines around Lily continued their steady rhythm.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

But everything else disappeared.

For two years, I had replayed the night my wife died thousands of times.

The phone call.

The hospital.

The doctor’s expression.

The words that shattered my life.

Car accident.

Sudden.

Nothing could have been done.

I had buried my wife believing the worst thing that could happen had already happened.

Now this man was telling me I had buried a lie.

Detective Reed stepped closer.

“Mr. Carson, you need to explain carefully.””

Michael nodded.

“I know.””

His eyes moved to Lily.

Then back to me.

“Anna wanted to tell you.””

My stomach tightened.

“Tell me what?””

Michael looked away.

“She found out what Evelyn was doing.””

The name hit like a punch.

Evelyn immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was sharper than before.

Desperate.

Michael looked at her.

“You told me you would never let this come out.””

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

Detective Reed raised a hand.

“Enough.””

He looked at Michael.

“Start from the beginning.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“Three years ago, Anna started noticing things.””

“What things?”” I asked.

“Money missing from the Whitmore Foundation.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“That’s a lie.””

Michael ignored her.

“She thought it was a mistake at first. Small amounts. Payments that didn’t make sense.

Fake invoices. But when she started digging, she realized it wasn’t random.””

Detective Reed pulled out his notebook.

“How much?””

“Almost half a million dollars.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Evelyn.

She didn’t look shocked.

She looked angry.

“You’re accusing me because you’re bitter.””

Michael laughed quietly.

“No. I’m accusing you because Anna died trying to stop you.””

My hands curled into fists.

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked at me.

“Anna was going to meet someone the night she died.””

“Who?””

“She never told me.””

“Then how do you know?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because she left me a message.””

Detective Reed immediately stepped forward.

“What message?””

Michael reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

“I saved it.””

He unlocked the screen.

My heart started pounding.

“You had this for two years?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you show me?””

His voice cracked.

“Because I was afraid.””

I stared at him.

“Afraid of what?””

He looked toward Evelyn.

“Her.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“This is insane.””

Michael pressed play.

At first, there was only silence.

Then Anna’s voice filled the room.

My breath caught.

Because even after two years, I knew that voice instantly.

“Michael, if anything happens to me, you need to tell Daniel.””

My knees nearly gave out.

Anna.

Alive.

Speaking.

Warning us.

The recording continued.

“I found out what Mom has been doing. She knows I know. She told me family matters more than money, but she doesn’t understand…”

A pause.

A shaky breath.

“She doesn’t understand that Lily comes first.””

I covered my mouth.

Lily opened her eyes slightly.

“Mommy?””

I immediately sat beside her.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

But I couldn’t look away from the phone.

Anna’s voice continued.

“If Daniel hears this, tell him I’m sorry. Tell him I tried.””

Then the recording ended.

Silence filled the room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Except Evelyn.

“That proves nothing.””

I looked at her.

The woman who had held my daughter while pretending to protect her.

The woman who had spent years trying to convince everyone I was dangerous.

“How can you say that?””

Her eyes flashed.

“Because grief makes people believe anything.””

Detective Reed stepped closer.

“Mrs. Whitmore, where were you the night Anna died?””

She hesitated.

“I already answered that.””

“Answer again.””

“I was home.””

Michael shook his head.

“No, you weren’t.””

Evelyn turned.

“Careful.””

Michael looked terrified.

But he kept going.

“You followed her.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

“Anna found proof. She was going to meet someone and turn everything over.””

“Who?””

He looked at Evelyn.

“Her mother.””

The words were barely spoken.

But they destroyed the room.

Evelyn’s face became expressionless.

Almost peaceful.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Detective Reed’s phone rang.

He stepped aside and answered.

“Yes?””

We watched his expression change.

A few seconds later, he ended the call.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“We found something.””

“What?””

“A hidden file in Anna’s old laptop.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Where?””

“Your house.””

My blood ran cold.

“My house?””

Detective Reed nodded.

“She encrypted it before she died.””

Evelyn suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

She grabbed her purse.

Detective Reed blocked the door.

“Going somewhere?””

She forced a smile.

“I need air.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“You need to hear what’s in that file.””

Evelyn stared at him.

For the first time, she looked like she understood something.

This was no longer about controlling a family.

No longer about custody.

No longer about reputation.

The truth was catching up.

And she knew it.

The detective opened the file on his tablet.

A video appeared.

The date on the screen made my heart stop.

It was recorded three days before Anna died.

Anna was sitting at our kitchen table.

Crying.

Looking directly into the camera.

And then she said my name.

“Daniel, if you’re watching this, it means I wasn’t able to protect you and Lily myself.””

I stopped breathing.

Anna looked terrified.

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

“Your mother-in-law knows about Lily’s allergy.””

My eyes moved slowly toward Evelyn.

May you like

Anna continued.

“And she knows exactly how to use it.””
