Chapter 1

My mother-in-law slapped me across the face on Christmas night.

The entire dining room went silent.

Then my husband laughed.

Ryan leaned back in his chair, holding his wineglass as if his mother had just told a funny joke.

His sister Brooke covered her mouth, but I could still hear her giggling.

Only my father-in-law, Thomas, looked horrified.

I stood beside the table with a bowl of hot soup in my hands. The force of Diane’s slap knocked me sideways. My hip hit a chair, and I fell hard against the floor.

The bowl shattered.

Burning soup splashed across my right hand.

I cried out, but Ryan did not move.

Diane stared down at me in her expensive red dress.

“Maybe that will teach you not to embarrass my son,” she said.

I looked at Ryan.

“You told her to do this?”

He shrugged.

“Mom is teaching you how to be a better wife.”

Something inside me broke.

For six years, I had paid our bills while Ryan searched for the perfect job.

I had forgiven his lies.

I had allowed Diane to criticize my cooking, my clothes, my career, and even the way I decorated my own home.

But that night, before dinner, I had discovered that eighty thousand dollars was missing from my savings account.

When I confronted Ryan, he accused me of ruining Christmas.

When I demanded answers from Diane, she slapped me.

And my husband laughed.

I slowly stood.

My burned hand trembled, but my voice did not.

I pulled off my wedding ring and placed it on the table.

Ryan’s smile disappeared.

“What are you doing?”

I slapped him.

The sound cracked through the room.

Brooke gasped.

Before Diane could react, I picked up the half-full soup pitcher and poured it over the front of her beautiful dress.

She screamed.

I stepped closer to both of them.

“Now you can learn some respect.”

Diane lunged at me, but Thomas stepped between us.

“That’s enough!” he shouted.

He had arrived late and had not removed his winter coat. Under one arm, he carried a thick brown envelope.

Ryan pointed at me.

“Dad, she attacked us! Call the police!”

“I already called them,” Thomas said.

Everyone froze.

Thomas placed the envelope on the dining table.

His hands were shaking.

“I came here because I discovered what you and your mother have been doing.”

Ryan went pale.

Diane grabbed Thomas’s arm.

“Not tonight.”

He pulled away from her.

“Especially tonight.”

He opened the envelope and removed several documents.

The first was the original deed to the house.

My name was the only name on it.

I had purchased the property with money my mother left me, but Ryan had spent months claiming that a later agreement gave him partial ownership.

There was no later agreement.

There was only a forged copy Diane had helped him create.

Thomas spread bank records beside the deed.

The withdrawals from my savings had gone into an account controlled by Diane.

Ryan had used a power-of-attorney document carrying my forged signature.

There were checks, transfer confirmations, emails, and printed messages between them.

One message made my stomach turn.

Once she signs the refinance papers, we take the rest and push her out.

Diane reached for the documents.

Thomas stopped her.

“I made copies.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Ryan rushed toward me.

“Claire, listen. We can explain.”

I pointed toward the front door.

“Get out of my house.”

“You’re my wife!”

“Not anymore.”

Diane refused to leave, so I opened the door and pushed her onto the snowy porch. Ryan followed, shouting threats until Thomas helped me force him outside.

I locked the door.

When the police arrived, Ryan told them I was unstable.

Then I handed an officer the envelope.

The officers read the documents, separated everyone, and called a financial-crimes detective.

Ryan’s anger became panic.

Diane began crying.

Neither performance worked.

As the officers placed them in handcuffs, Ryan looked at the ring on the table.

“Claire, please. We’re still married.”

I picked up the ring and handed it to the arresting officer.

May you like

“Take that too,” I said. “This marriage is over.”
