Chapter 1

My mother-in-law slapped me across the face while I was lying in a hospital bed and shoved a stack of papers onto my chest. “Sign them now,” she hissed—but one sentence on the last page made my blood run cold.

I had been awake for less than an hour after emergency surgery at a Boston hospital when Margaret walked into my room without knocking.

My husband, Ethan, was nowhere behind her.

“Where is Ethan?” I whispered.

She ignored me and pulled several folded papers from her handbag.

“You need to sign these.”

I could barely lift my arm.

“What are they?”

“Family paperwork,” she snapped. “Nothing you need to worry about.”

She placed a pen between my fingers.

I let it fall onto the blanket.

“I’m not signing anything until Ethan gets here.”

Margaret’s expression changed instantly.

She leaned over me and slapped me so hard my head hit the pillow.

“Stop pretending you have a choice.”

My heart started pounding.

“Get out.”

“Sign the papers, Emily.”

“No.”

She grabbed my wrist and tried forcing the pen back into my hand.

“You married into this family with nothing,” she whispered. “You will leave with nothing.”

That sentence woke me up faster than any medication could have.

I pulled the papers closer and began reading.

Margaret tried to take them back.

“Just sign.”

The first page mentioned financial authorization.

The second mentioned property.

Then I reached the final page.

My name was printed beside a line surrendering my rights to Ethan’s company shares, our house, and something called “custodial authority.”

I stared at her.

“Custody of who?”

Margaret went silent.

I pressed the red call button beside my bed.

She grabbed my hand.

“Don’t you dare.”

I pressed it again.

A nurse’s voice came through the speaker.

“Mrs. Carter, are you okay?”

“No,” I said. “Call my doctor. And security.”

Margaret suddenly ripped the papers from my chest.

“You’re making a terrible mistake.”

The door opened less than a minute later, and Dr. Reynolds walked in with two nurses.

He looked at Margaret, then at the red mark across my face.

“What happened?”

Before I could answer, he noticed the papers in her hand.

His face changed.

“Where did you get those?”

Margaret backed toward the door.

Dr. Reynolds turned to me and said quietly, “Emily, do not sign anything.”

May you like

Then he looked directly at my mother-in-law.

“Because your husband woke up twenty minutes ago—and the first thing he told police was that his mother caused the crash.”
