Chapter 3

Holly’s biological father was named Owen Blake.
He had disappeared before she was born.
Melissa spent years trying to contact him, but every letter came back unopened. When Brandon adopted Holly, Owen’s parental rights were legally terminated after he failed to answer the court.
Now he claimed he had never received notice.
Gene’s attorney argued that the adoption was fraudulent.
If a judge agreed, Holly could lose her place in Arthur’s trust.
Brandon read the petition with shaking hands.
“She doesn’t want Holly,” he said. “She wants the money.”
Detective Ortiz discovered Gene had transferred fifty thousand dollars to Owen two weeks earlier.
That was enough to reveal motive, but not enough to dismiss his legal claim.
Owen appeared outside Holly’s school the following afternoon.
He held balloons and told reporters he was a father trying to reunite with the daughter stolen from him.
Holly saw him through the classroom window.
“Who is that man?”
I knelt beside her.
“He helped create you, but he hasn’t been part of your life.”
“Is he my dad?”
“Brandon is your dad.”
She looked frightened.
“Can the man take me?”
“No one is taking you today.”
I wished I could promise more.
At the emergency hearing, Owen cried while describing his regret.
He said Melissa hid the pregnancy and Brandon used money to push him away.
Then Brandon’s attorney presented thirteen letters Melissa had mailed to Owen’s address.
Each contained information about Holly.
Owen claimed his mother had hidden them.
The judge refused to overturn the adoption without a full investigation. He also ordered Owen to stay away from Holly until a child specialist evaluated the situation.
Gene watched from the back of the courtroom.
She smiled at Holly.
My daughter moved behind Brandon.
After the hearing, Gene approached us.
“You can still end this,” she told Brandon.
“How?”
“Remove Holly from Arthur’s trust. Owen withdraws his petition, and everyone returns to normal.”
Brandon stared at her.
“You paid a stranger to frighten my child.”
“He is her real father.”
“I am her real father.”
Gene’s smile disappeared.
“Then prove it by giving up the money.”
Holly stepped forward.
“Grandpa gave it to me.”
Gene looked down at her.
“Grandpa was confused.”
“No. He said you would say that.”
Every adult became silent.
Holly touched Melissa’s locket.
“He told me not to believe you.”
Gene reached toward it.
I blocked her.
“Step away from my daughter.”
Detective Ortiz approached, and Gene left without another word.
That evening, the police searched Gene’s estate.
They found the wooden bird broken on her desk.
The hidden compartment was empty.
Paige insisted she had delivered it unopened. Gene claimed nothing was inside.
Holly used the silver key on the damaged lock.
A short melody played.
Then Arthur’s recorded voice came through a tiny speaker.
“If Gene says the trust belongs only to blood relatives, she is lying.”
Brandon closed his eyes.
Arthur continued.
“Holly became my granddaughter the day Brandon became her father. I leave her an equal share because family is built by love and responsibility, not biology.”
The recording ended abruptly.
Someone had removed the memory card containing the rest of Arthur’s statement.
Detective Ortiz searched Gene’s office again.
The card was gone.
But police found letters from Arthur to an unknown woman named Evelyn Blake.
Owen’s last name was Blake.
One letter contained a photograph of Arthur holding Owen as a baby.
Brandon stared at it.
“Owen knew my father?”
Samuel, the family attorney, went pale.
“There’s something your father never told you.”
Arthur had another son.
Owen was Brandon’s half brother.
That made Holly Arthur’s biological granddaughter too.
Gene’s entire argument about blood had been a lie.
Before we could confront her, my phone rang.
Holly’s school principal was calling.
May you like
Owen had returned with a forged custody order.
He had taken Holly from the playground.
