Chapter 5

The next morning, Detective Cole brought copies of my grandmother’s original complaint.

Her handwriting appeared at the bottom.

Margaret Ellis.

My grandmother.

She alleged that Robert Hale had moved money between trusts without permission.

One trust belonged to Sophie.

I felt sick.

“She knew?”

Cole nodded.

“She discovered irregular transfers shortly before her death.”

“Why wasn’t I told?”

“The complaint never reached a hearing.”

“Why?”

Cole looked uncomfortable.

“Your grandmother withdrew it.”

“That makes no sense.”

Lauren leaned forward.

“Unless someone pressured her.”

Detective Cole did not disagree.

We contacted the current trustee managing Sophie’s account.

A woman named Patricia Wells.

Patricia arrived carrying years of records.

“I took over after Mr. Hale was removed.”

“Removed by whom?” I asked.

“Your grandmother.”

“She withdrew her complaint.”

“She did. But privately, she changed trustees.”

“Why?”

Patricia hesitated.

“She believed someone inside your family was giving Mr. Hale information.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

“She never said.”

We reviewed the trust.

The balance stunned me.

$1.86 million.

I stared at Patricia.

“This belongs to Sophie?”

“Yes.”

“My grandmother never told me.”

“She instructed us not to reveal the amount until Sophie turned eighteen unless an emergency required it.”

“Why?”

“Protection.”

From whom?

That question hung in the room.

Then Patricia revealed something worse.

“There have been three attempts to change the trust beneficiary.”

“When?”

“The first was two years ago.”

“Who requested it?”

“A document supposedly signed by you.”

I looked at the signature.

It resembled mine.

But I had never signed it.

The second attempt happened eight months earlier.

The third happened last month.

All forged.

Detective Cole photographed everything.

“Who would benefit if these changes succeeded?”

Patricia pointed toward the paperwork.

The proposed replacement beneficiary was a family investment company.

Turner Capital LLC.

I looked at Lauren.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

Cole searched state records.

The company belonged to Mark Turner.

Ryan’s brother.

My stomach dropped.

Police picked up Mark that afternoon.

He denied everything.

“I created Turner Capital for real estate investments.”

“Why was it listed as beneficiary of your niece’s trust?”

“I don’t know.”

“Your signature appears on supporting documents.”

“Forged.”

Detective Cole laughed once.

“Everyone’s signatures seem to be forged.”

Mark became nervous.

Then investigators showed him footage from the hidden cameras.

He stopped talking.

His attorney arrived.

Hours later, Mark offered cooperation.

He admitted installing the cameras.

Ryan had asked him to.

But Mark claimed Ryan said the purpose was to catch me secretly moving money.

I stared at him through the interview-room glass.

“Ryan suspected me?”

Cole nodded.

“According to Mark.”

Then Mark admitted Robert Hale contacted him.

Hale convinced him Sophie’s trust had been stolen from the Turner family.

That made no sense.

The money came from my grandmother.

But Robert told Ryan and Mark otherwise.

He claimed Margaret had taken investments that belonged to Ryan’s late father.

A ridiculous story.

Except Ryan believed enough of it to investigate me secretly.

Then Mark said something that changed everything again.

“Hale showed us DNA results.”

Detective Cole frowned.

“What DNA results?”

“Ryan’s.”

My heart stopped.

“What did they say?”

Mark looked toward the mirror.

“He said Ryan wasn’t really a Turner.”

Ryan had spent his life believing George Turner was his father.

According to Robert Hale, that was false.

Cole asked, “Who did Hale claim was Ryan’s biological father?”

Mark swallowed.

“Margaret Ellis’s son.”

My uncle Daniel.

I stared at him.

If that claim were true, Ryan and I were biologically related.

I felt the room spin.

“No.”

Mark quickly added, “Ryan didn’t believe him either.”

“Then why keep digging?”

“Because Hale said Sophie’s trust proved it.”

“How?”

“He said Margaret created the trust because Sophie was actually her great-granddaughter through both sides of the family.”

I stood up.

“This is insane.”

Detective Cole stopped me.

“Emily.”

“What?”

“We need to verify it.”

I stared at her.

May you like

“Verify what?”

“Ryan’s paternity.”
