Chapter 6

Doctors rushed me into the delivery room.
Sophie clung to Dad in the hallway.
“I just found her,” she cried. “Don’t let her die.”
Dad promised he would protect both of us.
Inside, the baby’s heartbeat began falling.
Dr. Patel explained that stress had caused a placental complication.
They needed to perform an emergency delivery.
I signed the consent form with shaking hands.
Then a nurse placed an oxygen mask over my face.
The room blurred.
I heard someone say, “We’re losing the baby.”
After that, there was only darkness.
When I woke, Dad sat beside my bed.
His shirt was stained with blood.
“The baby?” I whispered.
He smiled through tears.
“She’s small, but she’s fighting.”
My daughter had been born by emergency surgery.
She weighed four pounds, three ounces.
She breathed with help from a machine in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Sophie slept in a chair near the window, wrapped in Dad’s coat.
Ryan did not know the baby had been born.
I wanted it kept that way.
But someone inside the hospital accessed my confidential records within an hour.
A call came from the county jail.
Ryan demanded information about “his daughter.”
He had learned the sex, weight, and room number.
Federal agents traced the leak to a hospital administrator connected to Dr. Keller.
The administrator disappeared before she could be questioned.
Security around the neonatal unit doubled.
I was allowed to visit the baby that afternoon.
She looked impossibly tiny beneath the wires.
I placed one finger inside the incubator.
Her hand closed around it.
“I’m naming her Hope,” I whispered.
Sophie stood beside me.
“Because she survived?”
“Because both of you did.”
Ryan filed an emergency petition from jail demanding parental access.
His attorney argued that criminal charges did not remove his rights.
The new family-court judge rejected an immediate visit but scheduled a hearing.
Ryan’s plan had failed, yet the law still recognized him as Hope’s father.
I asked for a DNA test.
Everyone stared at me.
“Ryan is her father,” Mom said quietly.
“He lied about Sophie. He lied about meeting me. I need proof of everything.”
The result arrived the next day.
Ryan was not Hope’s biological father.
I read the report repeatedly.
“That’s impossible.”
Ryan was the only man I had been with during the time I conceived.
Dr. Patel reviewed my fertility records.
Ryan and I had struggled to have a baby for two years.
Six months earlier, Dr. Keller performed an insemination procedure at Diane’s recommendation.
He claimed he used Ryan’s sample.
He had not.
The laboratory identification number belonged to an anonymous donor.
Detective Ruiz searched the clinic’s remaining database.
The donor profile had been deleted.
But an archived invoice showed Diane paid Keller privately the day before the procedure.
“Why would Ryan agree to this?” I asked.
“Maybe he didn’t,” Dad said.
I remembered Ryan refusing to discuss the clinic afterward.
He became controlling when I asked about test results.
He knew something.
Federal agents questioned him.
Ryan admitted Keller said his sample had very low viability.
Diane convinced him to use a donor secretly.
“She said Emma would leave if she knew,” Ryan claimed.
“You let me believe the baby was yours.”
“I was going to raise her.”
“You were going to give her to your mother.”
His expression hardened.
“You forced us to protect her.”
“From me?”
“From the truth.”
The phrase made no sense until the DNA database found a close family match.
Hope’s biological father was related to Dr. Keller.
Further testing produced the answer.
Keller had used his own genetic material.
He was Hope’s biological father.
I became sick.
The procedure had been a violation disguised as medical care.
Diane and Ryan had known.
They planned to place Hope with Diane so Keller’s crime would remain hidden.
Before investigators could charge him, a fire alarm sounded inside the hospital.
Smoke poured from a storage room near the neonatal unit.
Agents rushed toward Hope’s incubator.
In the confusion, a woman wearing surgical scrubs entered Sophie’s room.
Mom saw her first.
The woman pushed a drug into Sophie’s IV line.
Mom screamed and pulled the needle free.
The attacker struck her and ran.
Police caught the woman in the stairwell.
She was the missing hospital administrator.

Inside her pocket was a message from Keller.
