Chapter 1

“Sign.”

Eleanor dropped the transfer papers onto my hospital blanket only hours after I gave birth.

My legs were still numb from a serious delivery complication. Doctors had warned me that movement might return gradually, but at that moment I could barely shift myself in bed.

Julian stood beside his mother.

Behind him was Cassandra, his mistress, wearing one of his shirts beneath an open coat as if humiliating me had become part of their celebration.

My newborn daughter, Grace, slept in the hospital bassinet.

I stared at the papers.

“What am I signing?”

Julian answered.

“Temporary control of Vance Development.”

My company.

The company my father had started and I had spent fourteen years expanding into a forty-million-dollar real-estate business.

I laughed.

“No.”

Eleanor leaned closer.

“Your condition has changed things.”

“My legs are temporarily paralyzed. My brain works perfectly.”

She slapped me.

Pain burned across my cheek.

“Who will believe a paralyzed woman?”

Cassandra smiled.

Julian lifted Grace from the bassinet.

My heart stopped.

“Put her down.”

“Sign,” he said, carrying my daughter beyond my reach, “or we’ll declare you incompetent.”

“You would use our baby against me?”

“I’m protecting our future.”

“Our future?”

Cassandra moved beside him.

That was when I understood.

There was no “our.”

They had already replaced me.

What they did not know was that my phone was recording beneath the blanket.

I had started it the moment Eleanor entered carrying legal papers.

“Say it again,” I whispered.

Julian frowned.

“What?”

“Tell me what happens if I refuse.”

His arrogance did the rest.

“You lose control of the company. I become acting president. Mom controls the family trust, and Cassandra handles the properties.”

I almost smiled.

Then the door opened.

My attorney, Rebecca Sloan, entered with hospital security.

“Keep talking, Julian.”

His face turned white.

Rebecca held up her phone.

“Every word has been recorded.”

Cassandra stepped backward.

Eleanor lunged toward my bed.

Security blocked her.

Rebecca placed another document in front of Julian.

“Vance Development belongs entirely to Amelia’s family trust. So do both residences and both vehicles.”

Julian stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

“You own nothing.”

I unlocked my company tablet.

With Rebecca’s help, I revoked Julian’s executive credentials, company cards, building access, and authorization over every account.

Cassandra screamed that I was ruining their lives.

I looked at Grace.

“You tried to steal mine first.”

Police arrived after listening to the recording.

As officers escorted Julian from the room, he looked back at me.

“Amelia, please. We can fix this.”

I held my daughter against my chest.

“You mistook paralysis for helplessness.”

Then Rebecca closed the door.

But she did not look relieved.

“Amelia, we found something while freezing Julian’s access.”

“What?”

She placed a bank statement beside me.

May you like

“Someone has already moved eight million dollars out of Vance Development.”
