Chapter 10

We returned to the new house one week later.

Not to live.

To collect our things.

Calla said she wanted to come.

Elise and I both said no.

Calla crossed her arms.

“That house stole my mom. I want to see it empty.”

I looked at Elise.

She looked back.

We were learning how to parent together again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Without using fear as a shortcut.

So we brought her.

With police present.

With security.

With every door opened before she entered.

The pool house stood at the far end of the yard, quiet under the morning sun.

Calla stared at it.

Her face was pale.

Elise squeezed her hand.

“We can leave.”

Calla shook her head.

“No.”

She walked across the yard.

Each step seemed too heavy for a child.

At the door, she stopped.

I unlocked it.

The room inside was bare now.

Police had taken everything.

The chair.

The rope.

The water bottles.

The blanket.

Evidence.

Calla stood in the doorway.

Then she whispered, “It’s smaller than I thought.”

Elise knelt beside her.

“Fear makes rooms bigger.”

Calla looked at her.

“Did you think I forgot you?”

Elise began to cry.

“No.”

“But were you scared?”

“Yes.”

“Me too.”

They held each other there, in the doorway of the place that should have broken them but did not.

Inside the house, we packed fast.

Clothes.

Photos.

Calla’s books.

Nothing Drea had bought.

In the master closet, Elise found a locked drawer.

The police opened it.

Inside were passports.

A burner phone.

Cash.

And a small velvet box.

Not jewelry.

A USB drive.

Detective Ramirez bagged it, but not before I saw the label.

M.W. after wedding.

My initials.

My blood went cold.

“What does that mean?” Elise asked.

“I don’t know.”

But I did.

Some part of me knew.

That evening, Ramirez called.

The drive contained videos.

Edited clips of me drinking at parties.

Arguments taken out of context.

Footage of Calla crying after nightmares.

A fake narrative waiting to be built.

Drea had not only planned to erase Elise.

May you like

She planned to control me too.

After the wedding, I was next.
