Chapter 5: The Daughter They Tried to Silence

The message on my phone stayed on the screen for what felt like an eternity.

*You’re looking for the truth about Sarah’s death. But you never asked why Lily was the real target.*

I read it again.

Then again.

Every word felt heavier the third time.

My daughter.

Not me.

Not Daniel.

Not Sarah’s old secrets.

Lily.

I looked at her standing beside me.

The same little girl who used to run into my garage holding a broken toy and asking me to fix it.

The same girl who sat on my shoulders at county fairs.

The same girl who had cried herself to sleep after losing her mother.

And now she was a grown woman standing in front of me, bruised and terrified, because someone wanted her quiet.

“Lily,” I said softly.

She looked at me.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward her.

The second she saw the message, all the color drained from her face.

“Dad…”

Daniel noticed.

“What is it?””

I handed him the phone.

He read the message.

His expression changed instantly.

“That’s impossible.””

I stared at him.

“What is?””

He looked at Lily.

“Sarah never told anyone about Lily.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked like he regretted saying anything.

“Your wife was investigating more than financial crimes.””

Richard suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

I turned.

“No.””

My voice cut through the room.

“You don’t get to decide when this conversation ends.””

Richard’s jaw clenched.

“You have no idea what you’re dragging your daughter into.””

I walked closer.

“You already dragged her into it.””

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

That scared me more than his anger.

Because arrogant people don’t become quiet unless they know something dangerous is coming.

Lily wiped her face.

“Dad, there’s something I need to tell you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What?””

She looked at Richard.

Then Evelyn.

Then back at me.

“I didn’t meet Daniel by accident.””

I waited.

“When I started searching for him, I found old emails.””

“Emails from who?””

She swallowed.

“Mom.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor moved beneath me.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

She reached into her purse with shaking hands.

Then she pulled out a small envelope.

“I found it hidden inside one of Mom’s old books.””

I stared at the envelope.

My hands felt heavy when I took it.

The handwriting stopped me.

Sarah’s handwriting.

My wife’s handwriting.

The woman I thought I would never hear from again.

My fingers trembled.

“What does it say?””

Lily looked away.

“I only read part of it.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one folded piece of paper.

Just one page.

My eyes moved across the first line.

*Tom, if you are reading this, something happened to me.*

My breath caught.

I kept reading.

*I need you to trust Lily. She knows more than she realizes.*

I looked at my daughter.

More than she realizes?

The words made no sense.

Sarah continued:

*The people involved will try to convince you Lily is the problem. They will tell you she is confused, emotional, or dangerous. Don’t believe them.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

Because those were the exact words Richard and Evelyn had used.

Emotional.

Unstable.

A problem.

I kept reading.

*Lily found something I never wanted her to see. She was only seventeen, and I thought I could protect her. I was wrong.*

The room felt colder.

I looked at Lily.

“What did you find?””

She started crying.

“I don’t remember.””

“Lily.””

“I was young.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Mom told me she was going on a trip. She was scared. She gave me a box and told me not to open it unless something happened.””

My heart raced.

“What box?””

She shook her head.

“I never opened it.””

“Why?””

Her voice became smaller.

“Because Richard found it first.””

I turned slowly toward him.

Richard’s face had gone completely blank.

That was the answer.

“What did you do with the box?””

He didn’t respond.

I stepped forward.

“What did you do?””

Richard looked at Lily.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””

Lily stood straighter.

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“But I know what you did.””

Richard laughed.

“You really think your father can protect you?””

I looked at him.

“Not just me.””

I nodded toward Daniel.

“You forgot something.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“You brought the past back into this house.””

A silence followed.

Then Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small recorder.

“I thought I would never need this.””

Richard’s face changed.

“What is that?””

Daniel pressed a button.

A voice filled the room.

Sarah’s voice.

My knees almost gave out.

After fifteen years, I heard my wife again.

“Daniel, if anything happens to me, Richard knows about the files.””

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

“He thinks Lily is the key because she saw the documents. She doesn’t understand what she saw.””

A pause.

Then Sarah whispered:

“But my daughter remembers everything.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone was looking at Lily.

She slowly shook her head.

“I don’t remember.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You do.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

His voice softened.

“You blocked it out.””

Lily looked terrified.

“What did I see?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

But before he could answer...

The lights went out.

The entire house dropped into darkness.

Someone screamed outside.

Then came the sound of glass breaking.

Richard whispered:

“Oh no.””

I turned toward him.

“You know who that is.””

He didn’t answer.

And that was when I heard footsteps upstairs.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming closer.

A voice called from the darkness.

“Lily.””

My daughter froze.

Because she recognized the voice.

And when she whispered the name...

I felt my blood turn cold.

“Dad…”

May you like

She grabbed my hand.

“That’s the man who took Mom’s box.””
