Chapter 1

Minutes after I gave birth, my eight-year-old daughter hid me beneath the hospital bed—where I heard her grandmother and a doctor admit they had forged my signature to take my newborn son.

“Mom, hide now,” Emily whispered.

I stared at her.

“What?”

Her small face was pale.

“Grandma Linda said they’re handling everything.”

Something about the way she said it terrified me.

My body still hurt from delivery, but I forced myself out of bed.

Emily helped pull the blanket down to hide me.

Then I heard footsteps.

I slipped beneath the bed just as the door opened.

Linda entered with a doctor I had never seen before.

He was tall, gray-haired, and wearing a hospital coat without an identification badge.

“She should still be unconscious,” Linda said.

“She woke earlier than expected,” the doctor replied.

Linda looked toward the bassinet where my newborn son, Noah, slept.

“Then give her something.”

My blood went cold.

The doctor lowered his voice.

“Once the transfer papers are processed, we take the baby downstairs.”

“And my son gets custody?”

“If everything goes according to plan.”

I covered my mouth.

My husband, Daniel?

Was he involved?

Linda walked toward Noah.

“You poor little thing,” she whispered. “Your mother was never stable enough for you.”

Rage burned through every ounce of exhaustion.

Beside the bed, Emily had left her phone recording.

My brave little girl had understood something was wrong before I did.

The doctor opened a folder.

“Her signature is already on the guardianship authorization.”

Linda laughed softly.

“She signs everything Daniel puts in front of her.”

I crawled out.

Linda screamed.

I stood between her and Noah.

“You will never touch my children.”

Her face changed instantly.

“Sophie, you need to lie down.”

“Stay away from my son.”

She reached toward the bassinet.

I shoved her arm away.

Emily pressed the emergency button.

Alarms sounded.

Nurses rushed inside.

The unfamiliar doctor ran toward the hallway.

Security officers blocked him near the elevators.

Linda tried to follow.

Two nurses stopped her.

“You’re confused,” Linda shouted at me. “You just gave birth!”

Emily grabbed her phone.

“She’s not confused.”

My daughter handed the recording to hospital security.

Then police arrived.

An officer searched Linda’s purse.

He pulled out custody papers.

My name was printed across the bottom.

My signature appeared beneath it.

Except I had never signed them.

The officer frowned.

“Mrs. Carter, these documents authorize permanent custody of Noah and Emily to Linda Carter.”

I stopped breathing.

Not just my newborn.

Emily too.

Linda’s face went white.

Then the officer removed another envelope.

Inside was a court petition declaring me mentally incompetent.

Attached was a letter from my husband.

Daniel Carter.

My hands began shaking.

May you like

He had signed it.
