Chapter 5 - THE SECRET SHE HID

Her words hung in the smoky air of the study.

“She never existed?” David repeated. “That is impossible. I met her. We dated for months. We married three years ago. She has family—friends—photos—”

“All of it was fake.” The woman standing before us spoke without hesitation. “Names, stories, photographs, family—all of it built specifically for you. To make you trust me. To get me inside this house.”

David shook his head as if he had been struck. “No. That cannot be. I know who she was.”

“You knew the person I was paid to pretend to be.” She took a slow breath, her eyes hard and bright. “I was hired. Three years ago. Given a name, a history, a carefully constructed past—and told to marry you.”

“Paid?” Ethan stepped forward. “By whom?”

“By the same people who want what is inside that box.” She nodded toward the mahogany case. “The same people who have been waiting ten years for Richard to die so they could come and collect what he stole.”

“Stole?” I asked, my voice thin. “Richard never stole anything.”

“That is what he told you.” She looked at me with something almost like pity. “But Richard Hayes was not the man you thought he was.”

David stepped between us. “Stop it. Just stop. You are making all of this up to confuse us.”

“Am I?” She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, silver locket—exactly like the one in the photograph we had found earlier. She opened it. Inside was not a picture of David or of any family. It held only a single, faded photograph of a younger man.

A man I recognized instantly.

A man who had been standing right where Ethan stood now, ten years ago.

“Who is that?” Ethan asked, his voice tight.

“My brother.” She closed the locket. “The man Richard Hayes killed.”

The room went silent.

“Killed?” I whispered.

“Ten years ago.” Her voice trembled now, but not with fear—with rage. “My brother came to this house to speak with Richard. About a partnership they had formed. About money. About a secret. He never left. Richard told everyone he had vanished. That he had run away to escape debt. That he was a thief.” She looked straight at Ethan. “Just like he told everyone about your father.”

Ethan went pale. “My father?”

“Richard was not the good man you remember.” She turned back to the desk. “He was a man who took what he wanted. Who buried anyone who stood in his way. My brother found out the truth about something Richard had hidden—something worth billions—and Richard killed him to keep it secret.”

“And you?” David asked, his voice barely audible. “You married me… for revenge?”

“Partly.” She looked at David, and for the first time I saw something beneath the anger. Sadness. Regret. “Partly because I needed access. But I did not expect…” She stopped, swallowed hard. “I did not expect to actually care about you.”

“Care?” David laughed bitterly. “You threatened my mother. You locked her in a cold room. You held us at gunpoint!”

“Because I ran out of time!” She stepped forward, her hands still raised. “Someone else is coming! Someone far more dangerous than me! They know Richard is dead! They know the box is here! And they will kill every single one of you to get what they want!”

“Who?” Ethan demanded. “Who is coming?”

Before she could answer, her phone rang.

She froze.

“Answer it,” David said, keeping the gun steady. “Put it on speaker.”

She hesitated, then pulled the phone from her pocket and answered. She pressed the speaker button.

A man’s voice came through—calm, cold, and utterly without emotion.

“You have failed.”

She did not speak.

“You were given one task.” The voice continued. “Retrieve the box and the documents. Eliminate any witnesses. Instead, you have been identified. You have exposed the operation.”

“I had difficulties,” she said.

“Difficulties are not acceptable.” The voice paused. “We are already inside the gates. We will handle it from here.”

Her eyes widened. “No—wait—give me more time—”

“It is done.” The call ended.

She lowered the phone, her face white.

“They are here.” She looked up at us, terrified. “They are already inside the house.”
