I heard my five-year-old daughter screaming from her bedroom and found my wife holding a hot hair straightener inches from the child’s face.

The room was a mess.

Clothes covered the floor.

Drawers had been pulled open.

Sophie sat on the bed with her wrists tied together.

Her cheeks were soaked with tears.

Vanessa stood over her.

The straightener hissed in her hand.

“Tell me where it is.”

“I don’t know,” Sophie sobbed.

Vanessa moved it closer.

“You useless little rat.”

“Please stop.”

I rushed through the doorway.

I grabbed Vanessa’s wrist and tore the straightener away.

Then I untied Sophie and pulled her against my chest.

Her whole body was shaking.

“Daddy…”

“I’m here.”

Vanessa pointed at her.

“She stole something from me.”

“She is five.”

“She lies.”

Sophie buried her face against my neck.

Vanessa reached toward her again.

I blocked her.

“Don’t touch my daughter.”

“She needs to confess.”

“Confess to what?”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“That doesn’t concern you.”

I looked at the red marks around Sophie’s wrists.

Something inside me snapped.

I switched the straightener off and pressed its warm outer casing against Vanessa’s arm.

She screamed and jerked away.

“Are you insane?”

“You thought heat would make a child talk.”

Vanessa stumbled backward, shouting at both of us.

Sophie clung tighter to me.

Then she whispered:

“Daddy, she isn’t looking for jewelry.”

Vanessa froze.

I looked down at my daughter.

“What is she looking for?”

Sophie pointed toward the torn lining of her pillow.

Inside was a small black memory card.

Vanessa lunged forward.

“Give me that!”

I stepped between them.

Sophie placed the card in my hand.

Her voice became almost silent.

“She said it shows what happened before Mommy died.”

Vanessa’s face went completely pale.

But Sophie wasn’t looking at her.

She was staring at the open closet.

Then three slow knocks came from behind the wall.
