Chapter 1

“Daddy, I was just hungry.”

Lily’s voice stopped me in the kitchen doorway.

My five-year-old daughter stood barefoot beside the counter, holding one slice of bread with both hands.

Vanessa snatched it away from her.

“She was stealing from Mason.”

I stared at the dinner table.

Vanessa’s eight-year-old son had a full plate in front of him.

Chicken.

Potatoes.

Fruit.

Lily had nothing.

“What did you say?”

Vanessa turned.

Her face changed when she saw me.

“Daniel. You’re home early.”

I looked at Lily.

“When did you last eat?”

She stared at the floor.

“Breakfast.”

It was nearly seven at night.

Vanessa rushed toward me.

“She refused lunch.”

Mason suddenly stood.

“No, she didn’t.”

His mother froze.

“Mason.”

He looked terrified, but he kept speaking.

“Mom locks the food whenever you leave.”

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Stop lying!”

I slapped her hand away and pulled both children behind me.

“Do not touch either of them.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“You’re believing a child over your wife?”

“I’m believing what I’m looking at.”

Lily wrapped her arms around my leg.

Mason reached into his pocket.

“I can prove it.”

He handed me an old phone.

“There are videos.”

Vanessa lunged.

I stepped between them.

“Back up.”

I opened the first recording.

Vanessa stood in the kitchen while Lily cried beside the refrigerator.

“You already ate,” Vanessa said.

“But I’m hungry.”

“You need to learn consequences.”

Another video showed Vanessa locking pantry cabinets.

Another showed Lily asking for an apple while Mason quietly pushed part of his sandwich toward her.

Then came the worst one.

Vanessa was speaking to a man I didn’t recognize.

“She must appear troubled before court,” Vanessa said.

The stranger replied, “The more unstable she looks, the stronger your argument.”

My blood turned cold.

“What court?”

Vanessa backed away.

“Daniel, let me explain.”

“Explain what?”

She started crying.

“I was trying to protect our family.”

“By starving my daughter?”

“She needs structure!”

“She needs food!”

I opened another clip.

The stranger said:

“Once Daniel loses custody, you control the household without interference.”

I stared at Vanessa.

“You were trying to take Lily from me.”

“No.”

“You wanted a court to think she was neglected.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

Mason whispered, “Mom said Lily would go away.”

Vanessa spun toward him.

“You little traitor!”

I moved in front of him.

“Enough.”

I grabbed Vanessa’s coat and purse.

“What are you doing?”

“Getting you out of my house.”

“You can’t throw me out!”

I opened the front door.

“Watch me.”

She tried to push past me.

I forced the door wider and guided her onto the porch.

“You starved my daughter to build a custody case against me.”

“Daniel!”

I locked the door.

Police arrived minutes later.

Mason handed them his phone.

One officer watched the final recording twice.

Then he looked at Vanessa through the window.

“Sir, do you recognize the man speaking with your wife?”

“No.”

Mason quietly raised his hand.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

“He came here before.”

I crouched.

“When?”

Mason swallowed.

“When you were at work.”

“Who is he?”

Mason looked toward his mother outside.

Then whispered:

“He told Mom he was Lily’s real father.”
