Chapter 3 - The Phone Call Sophia Was Never Meant to HearThe alarm cut through the mansion like a blade.

Carlo immediately reached for his radio.

“South gate,” a guard shouted through static. “Vehicle breached the outer barrier.”

Ethan’s focus changed instantly.

Heartbreak could wait.

Survival could not.

“How many?”

“Unknown.”

“Lock the estate.”

“Yes, boss.”

Carlo ran.

Ethan turned toward Sophia.

“Emily.”

Sophia’s eyes widened.

He pointed toward the private hallway.

“Go to her. Carlo will take you both downstairs.”

Sophia hurried toward the door.

Then stopped.

“Mr. Ethan.”

He looked at her.

She pressed both hands together.

“Thank you.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Get your daughter.”

She left.

Olivia remained by the window.

Ethan turned toward her.

“How many men?”

“I don’t know.”

“You do.”

“I swear.”

He studied her.

Fear had stripped away most of her arrogance.

“How was Adrian planning to enter?”

Olivia hesitated.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Every second you waste puts Emily at risk.”

That broke something in her.

“The service entrance.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

“How?”

“I gave him the security rotation.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You gave him my security schedule.”

“I didn’t know he changed the plan!”

“What did you think he needed it for?”

“To get inside your office.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“During our wedding week?”

Olivia’s voice rose.

“He said he only wanted financial records!”

“And you believed him?”

“No.”

That answer surprised Ethan.

Olivia looked ashamed.

“I stopped believing Adrian months ago.”

“Then why continue?”

She stared at the floor.

“Because he had something on me.”

Finally.

There it was.

“What?”

Olivia didn’t answer.

The distant sound of engines grew louder.

Ethan’s radio cracked.

“Two SUVs. Possibly three.”

He looked toward the hallway.

His men were already moving.

Doors locking.

Security shutters lowering.

The estate that had looked peaceful minutes earlier transformed into a fortress.

Ethan had spent years trying to distance himself from the violence surrounding his family’s name.

But he had never been foolish enough to believe it disappeared because he wanted peace.

“Stay here,” he told Olivia.

She grabbed his arm.

“Ethan.”

He looked down at her hand.

She released him immediately.

“Adrian knows things about this house.”

“So did you.”

“He knows the emergency tunnels.”

Ethan froze.

“How?”

Olivia’s eyes filled.

“I told him.”

For the first time that afternoon, Ethan actually lost control.

He slammed his palm against the wall beside her.

Olivia jumped.

“You gave him the tunnel plans?”

“I was supposed to help him steal files!”

“You handed an enemy the only secure escape route for the people in this house.”

“I’m sorry.”

Ethan stared at her.

“I don’t care.”

He left.

As he moved through the corridor, he called Carlo.

“Do not use the tunnels.”

“Why?”

“Compromised.”

A beat.

“Understood.”

“Where are Sophia and Emily?”

“Moving to the west safe room.”

“Keep them there.”

Ethan descended the staircase.

Below, armed security personnel moved through the foyer.

The roses still lay scattered across the marble.

He saw them.

For some reason, that image stayed with him.

Three hours earlier, he had imagined handing those flowers to Olivia.

Now armed men were approaching his home because she had betrayed him.

Life could change faster than people understood.

Outside, tires screamed.

Then gunfire erupted near the perimeter.

Ethan ducked behind a marble column.

“Nonlethal if possible,” he ordered.

His security chief glanced at him.

“Boss?”

“I want Adrian alive.”

That changed the atmosphere.

Everyone understood why.

Dead men didn’t explain plans.

The first attackers entered through the service courtyard.

Ethan’s team intercepted them.

The confrontation was brief.

Professional.

Controlled.

Within several minutes, two intruders were restrained.

A third fled.

But Adrian was not among them.

Carlo appeared.

“This feels wrong.”

Ethan agreed.

“Distraction.”

“From what?”

They looked at each other.

Then Ethan understood.

The tunnel.

If Adrian knew the tunnels were compromised—

Maybe he wanted Ethan focused on them.

“West wing.”

Carlo’s face drained.

Sophia.

Emily.

They ran.

The safe room door stood open.

A guard lay unconscious nearby.

Ethan’s stomach dropped.

“Emily!”

No answer.

Carlo checked the guard.

“Alive.”

Ethan entered the room.

Empty.

Then a faint sound came from behind a storage cabinet.

Crying.

Ethan pulled it open.

Emily was hiding inside.

Sophia crouched over her.

Both were shaking.

Ethan exhaled.

“What happened?”

Sophia whispered, “Someone came through the back passage.”

“Did you see him?”

She nodded.

“He wore black.”

“Adrian?”

“I don’t know.”

Emily looked up.

“He asked where Mr. Ethan keeps his blue book.”

Ethan froze.

Blue book.

Only a handful of people knew what that meant.

A ledger.

Not criminal records.

Something more dangerous.

Years ago Ethan had created a private record detailing every corrupt transaction carried out by Adrian before his expulsion.

Names.

Accounts.

Political connections.

Judges.

Executives.

People Adrian had paid.

Ethan had never released it because doing so would destroy dozens of lives and perhaps trigger retaliation against innocent families.

But the ledger was insurance.

If Adrian ever returned.

He wanted it.

“Where is it?” Carlo asked.

Ethan didn’t answer.

Only Ethan knew.

At least, he thought only Ethan knew.

Then Sophia said something.

“The man told someone on the phone that Miss Olivia had already given him the combination.”

Ethan went cold.

“She knows the combination to my safe?”

Carlo frowned.

“You never gave it to her.”

“No.”

Which meant she had discovered it.

Or watched him.

Or recorded him.

Ethan turned.

“Stay here.”

He returned to the east suite with Carlo.

Olivia was gone.

The window stood open.

Curtains moved in the breeze.

Carlo cursed.

“She jumped?”

They looked down.

A trellis climbed along the exterior wall.

Olivia had used it to reach the garden.

Ethan’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Adrian’s voice.

“Still collecting roses, Ethan?”

Ethan said nothing.

Adrian laughed.

“You always did have sentimental weaknesses.”

“Where is Olivia?”

“With me.”

“Alive?”

“For now.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

Adrian continued.

“She made mistakes.”

“So did you.”

“You mean calling the house?”

“No.”

“What mistake?”

Ethan looked through the open window.

“You came back.”

Silence.

Then Adrian chuckled.

“That’s the Ethan I remember.”

“What do you want?”

“You know.”

“The ledger.”

“Bring it.”

“Where?”

Adrian gave an address.

An abandoned marina twenty miles north.

“Alone.”

Ethan smiled coldly.

“You know me better than that.”

“I know exactly who you are.”

Adrian paused.

“And if you bring anyone, Olivia dies.”

Ethan looked at Carlo.

Carlo could hear enough to understand.

Ethan said, “Why should I care?”

Silence.

Adrian hadn’t expected that.

“You were going to marry her.”

“She tried to kill me.”

Olivia’s voice suddenly sounded in the background.

“Ethan!”

Adrian pulled the phone away.

A struggle.

Then silence.

Ethan’s expression changed despite himself.

He hated what Olivia had done.

But he didn’t want her murdered.

Adrian returned.

“She’ll live if you cooperate.”

Ethan stared at the roses downstairs.

“Thirty minutes.”

“Good.”

The line disconnected.

Carlo immediately shook his head.

“You’re not going alone.”

“I know.”

“What about the ledger?”

Ethan looked toward his office.

“We bring it.”

Carlo stared at him.

“That ledger could destroy half the city.”

“Which is why Adrian can’t leave with it.”

They entered the office.

Ethan moved behind the desk.

He pressed a concealed switch.

A panel opened.

Inside sat a blue leather-bound book.

Carlo stared.

“You kept an actual book?”

“Adrian trusts digital information too much.”

Carlo almost smiled.

Then Ethan opened it.

The pages were blank.

Carlo blinked.

“What?”

Ethan removed the back cover.

Inside was a small encrypted drive.

“The book is theater.”

Carlo nodded.

“Better.”

Ethan closed it.

As they prepared to leave, Sophia appeared in the doorway.

Ethan looked irritated.

“You should be with Emily.”

“She’s with your security team.”

“What is it?”

Sophia held something.

A small memory card.

“I found this in my apron pocket.”

Ethan frowned.

“When?”

“Just now.”

She held it out.

“I think Emily put it there.”

Ethan took it.

“Why would Emily have this?”

Sophia’s face changed.

“She told me she picked something up from Miss Olivia’s floor before she ran to find you.”

Ethan looked at the tiny card.

It could contain anything.

Or nothing.

Carlo inserted it into a secure laptop.

A folder appeared.

Video files.

Audio recordings.

Photographs.

And one document titled:

PARKER TERMINATION PLAN.

Ethan stared at it.

Carlo opened the file.

The first line made both men silent.

PHASE ONE: MARRIAGE.

PHASE TWO: ASSET TRANSFER.

PHASE THREE: E.P. REMOVAL.

Then Ethan saw the final line.

PHASE FOUR: O.B. REMOVAL.

Olivia Bennett.

She wasn’t Adrian’s partner.

She was his final target.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Suddenly everything made sense.

Olivia hadn’t merely betrayed him.

She had joined a conspiracy without realizing she was disposable too.

Carlo looked at him.

“We need to tell her.”

Ethan picked up the blue ledger.

“We will.”

He looked toward the darkening sky beyond the windows.

“At the marina.”

But neither man knew that Adrian had already discovered the missing memory card.

And when Ethan’s car left the estate, Adrian changed the plan one final time.
