Chapter 3

Gabriel stared at my phone.

“That’s a lie.”

I wanted to believe him immediately.

But after Christian, trust no longer came easily.

“Where were you?”

He looked hurt.

“Emma.”

“Answer.”

“The night you lost your first baby, I was in Chicago.”

“For what?”

“Work.”

“Can you prove it?”

“Yes.”

Hannah interrupted.

“We’ll verify everything.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Good.”

He didn’t argue.

That helped.

Christian always became angry when questioned.

Gabriel simply handed Hannah his phone.

“Take whatever you need.”

Within an hour, investigators confirmed he had been in Chicago.

Hotel footage.

Flight records.

Client meetings.

Sabrina had lied.

But why?

“She wants me suspicious of everyone.”

Hannah nodded.

“She wants to isolate you.”

Then Dr. Marcus Feld requested a deal.

The physician who had altered my medication wanted protection.

In exchange, he promised to explain the pregnancies.

I agreed to listen from behind observation glass.

Marcus sat with his attorney.

His hands shook.

“Christian paid me.”

Hannah asked, “To terminate Emma’s pregnancies?”

“No.”

My heart pounded.

“What did he pay you to do?”

“To prevent pregnancy.”

That was different.

Marcus explained that Christian had secretly asked him to interfere with my fertility medication before I conceived.

He wanted to delay children until after our wedding contracts were finalized.

“But Emma became pregnant anyway,” Hannah said.

“Yes.”

“What happened then?”

Marcus looked terrified.

“Sabrina found out.”

My stomach twisted.

“What did she do?”

“She threatened me.”

“With what?”

“Evidence of insurance fraud from my clinic.”

Marcus had committed financial crimes years earlier.

Sabrina somehow knew.

She forced him to alter one prescription.

Not enough to guarantee a miscarriage.

But enough, he claimed, to increase medical risks.

My eyes filled with tears.

“You knew what could happen.”

Marcus whispered, “Yes.”

“And you did it anyway.”

He lowered his head.

“Yes.”

“What about the second pregnancy?”

He shook his head.

“That was Christian.”

Gabriel’s fists tightened.

Marcus explained that Christian discovered what Sabrina had done.

Instead of protecting me, he copied her.

“He said a child would trap him.”

I felt sick.

“He was already planning to marry me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he want a child?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Because of your father’s company.”

“What about it?”

“Your inheritance agreement changes if you have a biological child.”

I froze.

My father’s trust had a clause I barely remembered.

If I had a child, my publishing shares would automatically move into a protected family trust.

Christian would never control them.

If I remained childless and later became medically incapacitated, a spouse could potentially gain influence.

Gabriel whispered, “So the pregnancies protected the company from him.”

“Yes.”

That was why he sabotaged them.

Not only selfishness.

Money.

Again.

Hannah entered the interrogation room.

“Who gave Sabrina access to Emma’s medical files?”

Marcus shook his head.

“She already had them.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Then Daniel Price entered the observation room behind us.

He carried documents.

“We found Victor Lang’s original autopsy.”

Hannah joined us.

“What does it say?”

“Nothing unusual.”

“Then why are you concerned?”

“Because there are two autopsies.”

One listed natural cardiac arrest.

The second described evidence suggesting medication poisoning.

The second report had been buried.

“Who signed it?” I asked.

Daniel handed me the page.

Dr. Marcus Feld.

I stared through the glass at him.

Hannah returned to the interrogation room.

“You treated Victor Lang?”

Marcus went completely pale.

His attorney whispered something.

Marcus ignored him.

“I didn’t kill Victor.”

“Then who did?”

Silence.

“Dr. Feld.”

Marcus looked toward the observation window.

He knew I was there.

Then he whispered:

“Sabrina.”

My stomach dropped.

Marcus continued.

“She poisoned her own husband.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor discovered Christian wasn’t the real target.”

I stared at Hannah.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus took a shaking breath.

“Sabrina never cared about Christian’s career.”

“Then what did she want?”

He looked directly toward the glass.

May you like

“Emma.”

Me.
