Chapter 1 — The Camera Above the Kitchen

Daniel Morgan came home twenty minutes earlier than expected.

He had spent the entire afternoon in meetings and wanted nothing more than to walk through the front door, loosen his tie, and hear his six-year-old daughter Lily running toward him.

Instead, he heard crying.

Not ordinary frustration.

Not the little whimper Lily sometimes made when she was tired.

This was desperate.

“Lily?”

Daniel dropped his briefcase and followed the sound toward the bright marble kitchen.

The moment he stepped inside, he froze.

Lily stood beside the kitchen island, tears streaming down her red face. In front of her sat several metal baking trays.

Behind her stood Vanessa, the woman Daniel had trusted to care for Lily while he worked.

Vanessa’s hand was tangled roughly in the child’s hair as she tried to keep Lily standing in place.

“Stop moving!” Vanessa snapped.

Lily cried harder.

“Please! I want Daddy!”

Daniel felt his entire body go cold.

“Get your hand off her.”

Vanessa spun around.

Her face instantly changed.

“Daniel?”

Lily saw him and screamed:

“Daddy!”

Vanessa released her.

Daniel rushed across the kitchen and pulled Lily into his arms.

She buried her face against his suit jacket and clung to him with both hands.

“It’s okay,” he whispered. “I’m here.”

Lily was shaking.

Daniel looked over her head at Vanessa.

“What were you doing?”

Vanessa stepped backward.

“She was having a tantrum.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“She refused to listen to me.”

Lily lifted her tear-streaked face.

“She kept yelling at me.”

Vanessa immediately protested.

“She’s exaggerating!”

Daniel looked at his daughter again.

Lily’s eyes were swollen from crying.

That was enough.

“You’re done.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“What?”

“You’re leaving.”

Her expression changed from fear to anger.

“You’re firing me because a six-year-old cried?”

Daniel stepped closer while keeping Lily safely against his chest.

“I’m firing you because I walked into my kitchen and saw my daughter terrified of the person I trusted to protect her.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t know what happened before you walked in.”

For a moment, Daniel said nothing.

Then Lily suddenly pointed toward the ceiling.

“Daddy…”

Daniel followed her finger.

Mounted high in the corner of the kitchen was a small black security camera.

A red light blinked.

Daniel stared at it.

He had installed the system months earlier after a package disappeared from the front porch.

He had almost forgotten the kitchen camera existed.

Vanessa noticed where he was looking.

Her face drained of color.

Daniel slowly pulled out his phone.

“You’re right.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“About what?”

“I didn’t see what happened before I walked in.”

He opened the security app.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, wait.”

He looked directly at her.

“No.”

His voice was completely calm now.

“We’re going to watch everything.”

Lily tightened her arms around his neck.

Daniel kissed the top of her head.

Then he opened the recording.

Vanessa stood motionless.

The video began playing.

And within seconds, Daniel realized the scene he had witnessed was not the beginning.

It was only the moment he happened to come home.
